Hi There

possibly looking at buying one of the above, any advice pitfalls of buying one of these.

are they reliable vehicles, also are they expensive to fix when things go wrong as no longer made

what are the main problems associated with this model

are automatics more expensive than manual, silly question but are they semi automatic?

The FL2 isn't made any more, but that doesn't affect the cost of repairs. They are a modern design vehicle, which while being pretty reliable, does come with modern vehicle repair penalty.

The rear diff is a known problem which can be costly to repair/replace. The EGR valves can fail, as can the throttle body. They can also suffer from a plethora of electrical gremlins with door locks, wipers, indicators and windows. This sounds bad, but on the whole they are a pretty reliable vehicle. Keep in mind that lots of components are made by Ford, which helps lots.

In what way?
The auto doesn't need clutch replacements, but comes with its own maintenance costs instead, as well as a fuel economy penalty. It has Command Shift which is a way to take manual control of the gear changes. This is often referred to as Tiptronic, but that's a BMW name for a similar system.
Command Shift is still an auto gearbox, it just has manual shift control.

thanks, how often should they be serviced, is there time frames for doing certain jobs, can i ask do they have timing chains rather than belts;
is it a constant awd or can you drive it in 2wd then change to 4wd

my cousin has a older style range rover sport and he says it spends more times at the garage, loves the look of it but hates how unreliable it is

Service is anual or 12K miles, going from memory. It's prudent to service them more often if you're planning on keeping it long term.
It's a timing belt with a 100K miles 8 years change interval.

The RR Sport is a completely different and much more complex vehicle than the FL2.

knew the RRsport a totally different class, too posh/expensive for me, but mind you looks lovely dont think its ever been off road

im after a 4x4 that hopefully isnt a nightmare to do work on, too much technology on vehicles now., i need a idiots guide when it comes to cars.

if being one is the hse the more preferred model

The RR Sport is just a Discovery 3 chassis with a different body shell on top. It shares all it's mechanical and electrical components with the Discovery 3. The D3/ RRS do have a few problem components, which can be expensive to fix, if garages are used. I loved my D3 but decided that I simply didn't need such an expensive vehicle, once i I no longer needed 7 seats.

All modern 4X4s have a large number of electronics. Most need the owner to have a decent code reader, if garage bills are to be avoided.

The HSE is the best spec to own, although has the largest number of electronics to go wrong.

will dismiss the hse model, im just after a decent 4x4, currently have a 2002 l200 owned since a year old but its done 190k mile and never really let me down, but just done need a vehicle as big.

will be using a garage for repairs but the more fancy these cars get, its more electronics and more complicated

I'd buy a Toyota. ..I'm getting fed up of having to fix mine all the time....just got 3 Amigo again.

The F2 don't sound much better..why they stopped making um Nodge?

The FL2 name was probably dropped to rid LR of the perceived bad name of the Freelander.

The FL2 is actually still in production in a modified form, but is now under the RR Evoque and Discovery Sport names. Both the Evoque and D Sport use large amounts of FL2 platform and components. ;)

bet they come with a heftier price tag though

I was looking into thre FL2 but, as im getting older I cant be bothered repearing it all the time....Ive never had much problems with Toyotas, if somert fails you fix it and it stays fixed...With the freelander I seem to be fixing the same faults over and over again..
