Hello everyone.

I wanted some advice on buying a Disco. It belongs to a neighbour of mine who is very old now, He bought it new and its a 1999 model. TD5 GS. its always been MOT every year and has never had an advisory on any MOT. Its been kept in a heated garage and is basically like new... He is 88 now and can no longer drive it. The car has only done 32,000 miles from new with 0 previous keepers...

Is it worth buying I want one buy am just worried its to old....He wants £3000 for it

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks for the reply, Yeah it is a disco 2 actually sorry my mistake. It is like new to be honest. I was just thinking its still a 17 year old car and theres a big fuss at the moment about getting rid of diesels. I wasn't sure it was worth the money..

As @neilly has already mentioned, check the tyres. They can age and many people and even the motoring organisations recommend that the useful life is about 10 years immaterial of remaining tread.
That said, you should also consider replacing anything which could be considered "perishable" such as the drive belt, windscreen wiper blades and the rubber doughnut flexible coupler on the rear end of the rear prop shaft. Remember to get the prop shafts extending joints and U/J's re-greased, old grease can become hard and useless over time.
Look also at changing all the fluids and filters, including brake fluid which is hygroscopic, PAS fluid (use cold climate fluid STC50519) and the coolant.
Regarding the possibility of new diesel regulations, well, they haven't happened yet, and even if they do, you'll have a market stealer there.

Have a chat with your neighbour about what has been done - if its sailed through all its MOTs over the years chances are its been well looked after.

The biggest enemy of the D2 is water (as with any landy) and if its been kept in a heated garage chances are its not going to have a lot of the issues that these cars normally face.

Do take it for a proper test drive and make sure that it goes in and out of Hi/Low range properly - as the transfer lever might be seized if its never been used.
