Are you talking about a TD4 Freelander? If so, yes it is timed and requires a special tool to remove the pump without effecting timing.
 
Hi thanks for the reply i scewed to tool in that pushes the pump out but when i was doing it the engine spun round so now im worried that all the timing will be out.

That may well have ****ed something. I don’t know loads about the TD4, but I would be stripping it down and checking the timing. I don’t know if it can be done with the engine still in the car, but I can remember it being really tight for space to get the locking tool in.
