Advice needed on buying a 2003 RR

Just viewed a 2003 4.4 V8 HSE Range Rover with 108k on the clock 2 owners from new. I've not owned one before but always loved them. It's priced less than any others I've seen and I know that's normally too good to be true but it looked in very good condition and I've seen some bad ones.
The seller said that 2 weeks ago he put a new alternator on it and when he picked it up the mechanic told him he needed a new drivers side Catalytic converter costing £400 too. There didn't seem to be anything else wrong with it although the engine bay didn't look very clean.

Should I stay away from it because things are always too good to be true or is this normal? The car is a good £3-4k less than anything else I've seen but I don't want it to be in the work shop all the time. The seller said that it had been regularly serviced (although I didn't get a chance to see it)

Any advice will be appreciated.

I would not take a sellers word for anything. check all paperwork, get an HPI check and get that cat checked! Why has that one failed? Is there an engine fault/misfire that wrecked it?
If it sounds too good to be true then often it is. I have seen and heard too much bull**** this year when looking for a P38. Good luck

I think I'm going to have to get a mechanic to look at it before I part with any cash, like you said I don't trust the seller.
It's just that I saw 2 last week that were in worse condition and £5k more expensive. You can understand the appeal.

Yes I understand, but never rush, another car will come along that is right. It would be bad if you found out the cat was trashed because it needed a new engine. Get the emissions checked. what is the seller like and how long has he had it?

Indeed, a new engine would not be good. He's a trader, he bought it 2 weeks ago and put it straight in to his mechanic.

Owner-Trader? £9,000? Walk away. And don't look back.

If youve done your research and know what to check and are also taking a competent mechanic and you hPi it there is no reason to walk away from what could be a bargain. A dirty engine bay to me is a good sign as it means no one has tried to tart up and steam clean an oily engine.

Go look at the tale of woe posted by jay140285 before you buy a cheapy from a dealer.

I'm hoping to take my mechanic on Wednesday but it depends on how busy he is. Does anyone have any experience with RAC vehicle check, any good?

If your finding problems before you've bought it, for sure your going to find more once you've parted with your cash. It all depends on if you can do the work yourself and if it still then is a bargain. 4k off seems to good to be true, if your asking on here it's clear you need to WALK AWAY
