Hi Guys - recently replaced my fuel tank as the old one was 27 years old and leaking. Fitted a new sender unit as well. My tank is a single sender version that they used to fit to the original 90's. After fitting the tank I filled it up but the neddle on the guage read 3/4 full.

Is there some way to calibrate the fuel guage? Thanks

Make sure that the sender is free to rotate through its full movement and that the contacts on the sender unit are clean and its making good contact with them. Its a pretty simple design so cant be that much to go wrong. Also make sure that nothing is perhaps jamming the sender inside the tank though i think you can only really put it in one way

Thanks Wolf, I was careful to look at the way the sender was in the old tank and the new sender looked identical (even put them side by side to make sure they were identical), I put the new sender in so the float was free to move and as you say, it only fits one way around. It might be the contacts as I did not replace the clips so will take a look at that.

It works on a sliding resistance. So the high the float goes up the less resistance on the wiring. It sounds like the slide just needs a little clean.

Check the contacts on the sender itself as opposed to the spade terminals on top. They look like a small circuit board type thing and the float makes contact with them when it moves up and down. This is what gives the reading for the guage.

The arm isn't bent is it, it's only a piece of stiff wire with a float on the end when all said & done?
Easiest way to check is to remove the sender from the tank and check the gauge reading as you move the arm up & down and then if necessary bend it accordingly.

I've just fitted a new gauge to mine as it was reading full constantly ... may not be the gauge at fault with yours but if you decide it is I have a 2nd hand one spare as I bought two of them. That's ebay and bidding on two things at a time eh? ;)

You need to bend the metal on the float arm to calibrate it, you want it to show a red light when you still have about 2 gallons of fuel, at that it should show full before it is actually full.

Thanks guys.....will have a play - thanks for the offer Andy, will come back to you on that if I need a guage! Am off to Manila and Dhaka tonite for work so it may be a few days before I get back to you. Thks

Andy, seriously....you can have manila!! Its been 11 years now of this travel and it gets dull after a while I promise. Besides, I just drove down the M4 and its dumping with snow and my lad is probably off school tomorrow and I would love to hang out with him and a sled just mucking around but instead I get Emirates to Dubai and Manila! Well grumpy!

I was only joking chap ... I've done most of the world, although not Manila. I have licked a Manila envelope though so that must count :D

Hope all goes well and look forward to catching up soon ... safe trip buddy :)
