Additional engine temperature gauges?

Not my bag as it uses existing temp sender and then requires you to fit a sender in the expansion tank for the level.

I would rather fit something like this.

Could do a double and fit oil temp gauge that would show over heating if either sender fails a third is likely to save you.

Fitting a second stand alone temp sender is a better idea than using an existing as you can use one of these and fit it directly in the heater circuit that way it shows absolute temp straight out of the engine.

Durite capillary. Fit and forget and have accurate monitoring, they also do electrical sender types to.

Fit an oil pressure gauge while your at it aswell

I have capillary temp and pressure

Thanks for the replies.

The first unit doesn't use the existing sender, the sensors have rings on them which can be bolted to anywhere on the head.

As for fitting the sender into the heater circuit, what if the water level runs low? Obviously the sensor has to be immersed by the coolant to give a reading.

This is why I prefer the idea of a sensor attached to the metal of the head itself.

Just bin the original gauge and sender and then use the existing sensor hole landrover provided near the water pump and thermostat, for a capillary gauge. I can take photos of mine if you like.

A gauge with a sensor under the head of a bolt is just measuring the temp of that bolt, if it was me I would want one that is actually in the coolant flow.

Also one in the coolant flow will alert you of temp problems much quicker to coolant problems. The one sensing the metal of the head will be slower to react I would have thought, I.e you could loose loads of coolant and it could take a while for the metal of the head are to register a big enough increase in temp for you to notice. I would want to know much sooner.

Spoze it depends if you want head or coolant temp. Each will give you warning of impending meltdown. Then again so does smell.
I changed the gauges to digital readouts and the temp came with a sensor. I simply put it on the top hose and wrapped it in a strip of EVA foam and cable ties. It does the job very well, ie tells me when things are getting hot.
I think it was three quid for the whole thing. Same for the two battery voltage gauges and amps.

I already have some cheap ebay digital thermometer gauges with the probes under strips of foam at the radiator in/out connections.

Bobsticle: Is your series a petrol or diesel? I have tried one of these gauges (batttery powered) on a petrol engine and the ignition system interferes with the signal.

I have one gauge for radiator in and the other for out. They seem accurate enough, but I was thinking of fitting something where the sensor was actually in contact with the coolant.

I came across these on ebay which are intended for motorbikes so are neat and compact. The second one with comes with dual probes and a user-settable warning. They are fairly expensive though.

Mines diesel. They seem very expensive for something that may also get interfered with. Try a 12v regulator between the 12 supply and the gauge.
