acoustic engine blanket

Hi all, as anyone ever fitted, no someone who's got one fitted or got one of these fitted to there defender http://www.nkgroup.co.uk/product/vehicle-acoustic-engine-blankets/ if so are they worth the dosh ?

Anything that blocks access to the engine is going to be more hassle than its worth.

It looks like a good idea. It would only take a minute to remove in order to get to the engine.
ln the absence of any other replies though, it may be down to you to buy one and then report back when you've tried it out.

Av got one on mine reduced noise no bother to remove

I fitted something like this to my 1990, 110, 200 tdi and it has made some difference.
It took a few runs in the Defender to appreciate the difference at first. It's more noticeable at speed You can have a conversation without having to shout. They are rather expensive to my mind. but if I had that sort of money hanging around I would buy again.. It fits under the bonnet and once fitted you just forget about it. I would add I also have insulation around the transmittion tunneling which was in place when I first got it.
I run my Defender without any carpets. I do have some rubber mats but I don't use them as there was always puddles of water under them which rotted the footwells. If your Defender is water tight then carpetting of some sort would also help. Having said this I'm thinking I haven't seen any puddles of water for a long time.

Cheers all I think I will try one out, have got it all sound proofed and carpeted so I think it will be a worthy addition.

If im out with the missus id be happy to take the bonnet off to raise the noise level

I wonder if one of these will make any difference with TD5? Only this engine has an acoustic damping engine cover as standard.

I've read that Dynamat hoodliner makes a massive difference, more so than an engine blanket. It's what I'm gonna go for when my rebuild eventually gets that far

Yes Mick know we're you're coming from with that one could always use the ear plugs like warmers said . Have seen those dynamite hood liners didn't know they were any good was going to insulate the bonnet and fit a genuine bonnet liner, keep going rob I've been doing my rebuild just over 2 years will be fitting the seats and dash the weekend then wire in the extra's and its mot time .

I just close my electric window when I want more sound proofing but then I can't here my v8, oh the days of shouting in a defender when trying to have a conversation are long long behind me how quaint that people still put them selves threw the pain.....

Pretty cheap, easily fitted to the bonnet and bulkhead (self adhesive) and makes a difference.

There is a seller on ebay selling these precut. Also for the footwell and the rear, etc. The footwells would probably be easy enough to cut yourself but the bonet liner looks a bit more detailed.

In my series I tried the decibel meter with window open and closed and it was markedly higher with window shut!

I've used both the Dynamat bonnet kit, the Noisekiller bonnet kit and the Noisekiller engine blanket, all on a 300Tdi. Of the 3 I'd rate the engine blanket as having the greatest noise-killing effect. The stick-on bonnet kits didn't seem to have a dramatic effect although this is based on a non-scientific test.
My engine blanket is now 5 years old and needs to be replaced as it seems to have reduced itself to a big bag of rattling scrap. I've found this stuff online: http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/lead-foam-sandwich-1m-x-600mm which seems to be the same material but without the sleeve. Might be worth a try?

There's another thread on Lead Blankets... I'm sorry I'm not up on links... but I have the Noisekiller front soundproofing kit - under bonnet and front cab/footwells/seatbox/transmission tunnel... they offered a discount for their engine blankets after buying the kit... but didn't have the dosh at the time, but still got a discount code 'CLUB10' a year or so later... I went for the Large 900x500 blanket and definitely noticed an improvement.... I may get around to cutting a hole for the oil filler cap, but it's not too hard to release one of the cable ties. I don't have the original 'acoustic' rocker cover.

Like the look of that stuff zeaphod cheap and would fit nicely in the bonnet. That stuff looks good ogb would give it a go if I already had a blanket could just cut it and replace the inside , but would be a bit worried in fitting it with out the bag as you said yours had been reduced to a bag of scrap would be worried about bits falling off. Think I'll buy the blanket and keep that stuff from there ogb in mind for when I need to replace the inside.

I took out the under-bonnet insulation from my Disco 1 300Tdi, it was just a pain in the ar5e, kept on falling onto the top of the engine and soaking up water/oil.
I figured the noise wasn't so bad and it's an old truck ffs not a Rolls Royce!
