acea b3 vs. b4

My manual states engine oil should be "A3/B3" spec. Does that mean it's not a good idea to use "A3/B4" spec oil? Some oils are listed as "A3/B3/B4", but the one I'm asking about is listed only as "A3/B4".

From a little digging it seems that B4 is backward-compatible with B3, but does anyone know for certain?
 
so would you use A5 and B5 or not ?.

no .. at least not before i'd researched the reason for :

i.e. what is it regarding engine construction/use that would make that oil unsuitable ..

for the td4 .. i'd be looking into what data i could find from 'bmw'

( i'd like to keep my hippo for as long as possible .. and in good shape
( am not interested in .. 'run it to the ground then sell on' ..

for example .. for the manual gearbox .. some oils are not suitable
because they are too slippery .. and don't allow the synchromesh system to 'slow down'
resulting in difficult gear shifting
 
ok, the reason i ask is because i was sold a Q8 oil, and was told it is the right oil by the suppler who only sells oil and repaires hydrolic pipes (has done all his life). Anyway he told me it was the same spec oil that BMW used when they had landrover (did they ?, before my time mabie ?)Anyway here is a pic off the oil, i aint used it yet as not had time but your thoghts are very welcome.

cannot imagine it doing any harm .. :)

i've got a feeling that some oils like that might not be compatible
with vehicles that use / share the same oil for both engine and manual gearbox

reading thru the above .. i can't find any reason why not to use a B5 spec oil in the td4 ..
after all .. seems like the m47r was designed to use low viscosity oil

( yet to find any info on why an engine should not use the b5 spec .. maybe something to do with viscosity ?

that's after the m47r engine was designed and put into production and vehicle use

Yes - it's the right enough spec, and it'll be fine as long as you change at the recommended intervals.
Personally I prefer C3 rated oil - with the LL04 spec and extended oil-change intervals.

As for "before my time" - If you're under 15 or so (LOL :rolleyes:) I wouldn't expect you to know that BMW owned LandRover from 1994 until they sold it to Ford in 2000 who eventually said TaTa to it in 2008, selling it on, along with Jaguar, to the Indians

The only reason you have a BMW M47R engine is because the Germans wanted a German engine. ;) Built in Austria though. :p

Agree, remember when it was just Castrol GTX (multigrade). I just put today's equivalent in mine, Halfords normally and with my leakin crank seal its oil top up on regular basis. Sort of very slow, non stop oil change. My lads Corsa has to have Vauxhall oil - is there a bollocks emoticon??

Exactly. Its just another con! As already stated any 10W40 semi syn will do the job. Bloke was telling me that the French now have to carry not one but now two breath test devices by law and at their own expense - who lobbied for this, the crooks that make the testers of course. Not sure if this is example is true but it easily could be like fecking DLR's and the like. We have become the Sheeple!!

do you brits get gearbox oil called "BOT 402"? here in south africa, we are being recommended by castrol to use their BOT 402, as we can't seem to get MTF94 (for GETRAG box) .....

Sorry it wasnt my intension to hyjack the thread, it just seemed to make sence to ask about A5/B5 in the acea thread to save starting a new one:). Anyway thanks to all who gave there view on the subject.....

Ahh now the world seems a lot clearer:), thanks for that singvogel have never realy looked in to the history of land rover.
