ACE pump fail

My Td5 disco chewed up the fan belt so thought straight forward replacement. Wrong. Garage iv never used before says its the ACE pump and they removed it. I have to say the pully on it is rattling like a snake but when I was asked for 650 to get it replaced I queried its failure. Im a half wit with engines. Is alot of play in the pump a sign of failure requireing replacement.

Wow...650...thats steep considering it takes no more than 2 hours...and thats having 2 cups of tea and doing it for the first time. The pump cost between 300 and 350 new at most places but you can pick up a used one on ebay to get you by for some time. If you know how to use a spanner then you could be back to on the road for under a hundred quid easy. Im sure someones posted RAVE procedure for ace pump renewal on here, try a search.
