My steering column in and out adjustment stopped last week, the motor was making noise but the steering wasn't moving.

I started the car and moved it on Saturday on turning off the engine the retract steering wheel activated and the motor engaged with out the wheel moving , there was then the sound of something coming loose and dropping .

Nothing came out onto the floor mat, it sounded like a nut working loose and rattling down the column.

How do I access the column to inspect, is there a dash panel removal thread on here anywhere ?

Ok so I striped off the lower trim above the pedals to find a piece of a half round 40 to 50mm white nylon clip as if it's split in the middle and the motor still attached to the wiring loom with the shaft spline still attached.

Now how do I remove the centre dash trim to gain access to the steering column, and does this part attach to the underside of the column or the top ?
