Hi all, i'm new to the site but have enjoyed reading all the threads, informative & funny, but i wondered if i could pick your brains, i have a 2001 td4 gs, when i start the engine ABS light stays on, i reverse off drive, still on, then i put it in 1st & pull away & it goes off & stays off untill i have to restart the engine again then it goes off once pulled away, is this correct or have i got a problem, thanks.

Thanks for that Mad Hat Man thats put my mind at rest, & thanks for the quick response. All the best................

well, it saved me asking a daft question so heres another. why would an abs fault warning light stay on till the car moves? if it warns of a problem surely you shouldn't move it should you?

From the owners manual:

"Illuminates for approximately 1
second as a bulb and system check
when the starter switch is turned to
position ‘II’, and briefly extinguishes before
coming on again. If the light does not
extinguish and then come on again, then a fault
has occurred with the ABS system and you
should consult your Land Rover dealer at the
earliest opportunity. The warning light will
remain on until the vehicle is driven above
approximately 5 mph (7 km/h).
If the light remains on or subsequently
illuminates while driving, a fault has been
detected by the self-monitoring system. This
means that full ABS control may not be
available and you should consult your dealer at
the earliest opportunity
."

Interestingly, the manual for my 2003 TD4 states:

"The warning light should illuminate for approximately one second when the starter switch is turned to position "II" and then extinguish."

This is exactly what mine does - It doesn't come back on again. Weird the things that end up getting changed. Guess that Bosch changed how the ABS computer works...

Cheers

The ABS/TC/HDC lights always come on when you turn the ignition on. The TC & HDC lights will go out after a few seconds. The ABS light should go out once you start driving and get to about 5mph.

Is this not happening?

Yeah this is happening but the person who wants to buy it doesn’t want it coming on and then going off after driving it mate is there anyway to fix this?

They are talking rubbish and you are agreeing with them.

If the other lights go off after a couple of seconds and the ABS when you get up to about 5mph the car is working properly - there is nothing broken to fix.

I fail to see any problem - at least not with the car.

From about 2002/2003 all lights went out after a few seconds - this is because the ABS system changed from the Teves Mk20 in your car to a Teves Mk25 in the later cars - it uses a different type of ABS sensor.
