Hi, the relay on the abs it seems is playing up. Sometimes catch it buzzing loudly and the other day noticed the pump was running continually for a good five mins. Looking to replace the relay Inthe first instance, but seeing them at around £20- £30 a shot. A related good auto electrician can't see what the speciality is here for the cost. Same one with same "configuration" can be picked up for about a fiver.
Am I missing something here..?

You are missing the fact that it is a special high amp relay. The others would not last five minutes.

The D1 ABS pump relay is identical in appearance to the item used with the RR P38.
Disco item is rated a 70 amp and is a single contact relay, but the difference with the P38 item is that it has dual parallel contacts, which could/would indicate an higher amp rating.

Brakes will still work, but with out the ABS function if the pump relay failed.

I'm glad you don't mend my cars. Without fluid pressure only front brakes will work hydrostatically, so hope you have strong legs. Rear brakes will not work at all.

Would anyone who decides to skimp and not use the called out relay, please put up a post on brake failure modes when they come out of hospital.
In the event of an accident, insurance may be invalidated if brakes were to fail due to the wrong relay being fitted.
Without system pressure you need an hydraulic right leg to stop the car:eek:

On a traditional abs system, yes. On the '38 it is the heart of the systems performance and traction control as well as the abs when needed.;)
Ask how I know amongst others who have the pump not work briefly or not at all.... It's a little scary to say the least....

Your welcome buddy.... We came ...down a slip road off the motorway in the bus, down to a roundabout when I had no pressure in the system...

My engine used to cut out if you stopped after a motorway run, once you lose pressure they dos take some stopping
Handbrake felt like it was jumping about in a drum down there? New pants that night and now started using term E-brake
