Hi, I bought this 92 Classic last month with a few niggles I am determined to sort. I am still working on the CC but the next job I want to tackle is the brakes. The ABS light has been on since purchase but it may be unrelated as whats bothering me is the ABS pump being on so often. I know this has been covered in other posts but not really a definite answer can I find. On start up in the morning I timed the pump on for 90 secs, then in normal driving it comes on for 4 or 5 secs every 2 or 3 applications of brakes. I have changed the accumulator for a new one but no difference. Is this normal or should I look for something else ?

If you changed the accumulator - maybe the pump is weak and taking ages to fill the new accumulator....or the pressure switch is a bit dicky...

There is discussion on how long the pump should run on initial start up and how many brake applications you get before it runs again....I thought 45 seconds was long enough but others think longer is more usual....

I would conisder about 4-5 applications of the brake before the pump runs again, but again this has been discussed with others saying every 3 or so...

The ABS light will only go off once the stored fault codes have been cleared.

Pump should run for approx.45 seconds.

If ABS light on get blink code(s) but as already mentioned could be weak pump or failing pressure switch.

Nope, Rave for classic quotes 20 seconds as time to pressure system. Rave for P38 (essentially same system) quotes up to 40 seconds. The only place 45 seconds is quoted is in bleed procedure for classic were it says "If pump fails to stop within 45 seconds check system for leaks"

Sorry to be simple but I understand the pump may be weak and therefore taking a while to fill but what does the pressure switch do & how does it effect the time taken pls ? Also is it normal then for a healthy system to need charged after been left a few hours ?

It is certainly normal for a p38 to let the fluid back in to the reservoir and need recharging if left overnight or longer,i would imagine the same with a classic. As far as i know this is common and not really a fault.
