I've been having trouble with the abs on my Disco 1 for a while now, some times the light comes up, some times it doesn't, some times the abs will kick in randomly when I apply the brake and at other times it won't.

Took the wee beastie to my local garage today to get a couple of other issues sorted out and whilst it was there they did a diagnostic on it which came back with an open circuit fault on the abs ecu. It isn't something they want to do, anything mechanical they are spot on but computer electric stuff they prefer for someone else to do which is fine by me.

So does this usually point to the ecu being dead or is there a possibility of some dry soldered joints. Also can I just remove the ecu bit and still use the Disco (without abs obviously) whilst I repair/source a replacement?

Yes you can remove the ECU, the brakes will still work, and as u say without ABS, still using your disco with out ABS is it important to you?, is up to you.
My ABS only operates in snow or icy roads, so it's not that important to me for the rest of the year, so I can do with out it.
U need to put ECU in the hands of a specialist to find what's wrong.. if that is the cause of the problem with your ABS.

would be good to know on what was that open circuit exactly cos there's no such code as "open circuit on the ECU" in the wabco C diagnostic protocol, can be open circuit on earth , supply, relay, inlet/outlet valves, pump or sensors...not on the ECU, also i doubt that a garage which doesnt work with electronics would have a dedicated LR diagnostic software to read the wabco unit and if they'v used a generic reader that code is false.... do you have the warning lamp on?, cos if not that code is hystorical...the ABS will kick in when the sistem detects wheel slip only so randomly, that's normal... if the warning light comes on for ignition self test then goes out your system has no current fault in it

They took it to another garage who specialize in the diagnosis side of things but I'll ask again what the exact problem was. The light will stay on some of the time, yet at other times it will go out as it should only to come on later.
There is no sign of any wheel locking up yet the abs will come on seemingly at both high and slow speed.

Fod D1 you can run a plip test yourself with a paperclip, see attachment(disregard the V8 thing, the wabco system is the same)

Took the Disco into JSF 4x4 in Norwich today and they sorted it out nice and quickly. Twas an open circuit fault but on the left hand front sensor wiring. The wire had broken / burnt through somewhere under the air filter box, not somewhere I would have looked.
Treated it to a set of Grabber GT tyres as two fronts were border line legal and one of the rears was cracked.
