Hello everyone this newbie needs your help on the following problem.
My 99 Freelander 50th anniversary failed its MOT on a few items the first being the ABS light sequence .it is supposed to light up with the ignition on and go off after 2 seconds then back on until driven over 5mph , mine does not go out until it is driven and no further problems from there on but the guy at the mot centre quoted the VOSA statement regarding the sequence needless to say he failed it.
Any help would be welcome.
Thanks in Advance ....Paul:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

As far as i can remember with the earlier ones like yours that the abs light stays on till you hit 5 mph, i am sure that some one on here will confirm.

See my post about my ABS problem, mine needed a 're-set' of the ECU and was fine after that.

Something must be wrong with the ABS (or the ABS thinks there is)

Handbook procedure -

Illuminates for approximately 1 second as a bulb and
system check when the starter switch is turned to
position ’II’, and briefly extinguishes before coming on again. If the
light does not extinguish and then come on again, then a fault has
occurred with the ABS system and you should consult your Land
Rover dealer at the earliest opportunity. The warning light will
remain on until the vehicle is driven above approximately 5 mph
(7 km/h).
If the light remains on or subsequently illuminates while driving, a
fault has been detected by the self-monitoring system. This means
that full ABS control may not be available and you should consult
your dealer at the earliest opportunity.

Thanks guys i will try disconnecting the battery for a couple of hours but if that fails as luggsey has said, i will then need to find someone in kent that can be trusted to plug the unit in and find out what the problem is . the abs seems to work fine and the descent control works atleast i can hear the abs pump and the car slows down so other than the light not going out for the short period maybe luggsey's re-set would do the trick.Any one know of a trustworthy near Gravesend in Kent that may be able to plug the old dog in ...Thanks in advance..Paul

I have a 1999 freelander XEI 50th and my abs light comes on when started and does not go off until I do over 5mph and it just passed it's MOT. I think you may have a bit of an anal MOT inspector there.

Inclined to agree there.

Although I haven't specifically checked for an abs light to "extinguish briefly after 1.3 to 2 seconds and then come on again" I've never noticed it on either the early or later system. Could it be that it's so fast you don't notice?
If there was an abs fault the light would remain on.

If the light stays on until 5mph or so then it means there is a stored fault, but no current fault. I wouldn't expect that to be an MOT failure. You will have to plug it in to a computer to read the fault and clear it

No, all pre 2002my Teves Mk20 systems stay on untill 5mph because they only have passive sensors.....nothing to do with stored fault codes.

Ok Thanks everyone it looks like a phone call to Dakar 4x4 on monday to see if they can do a reading and hopefully just a reset. Does anyone know the cost involved for a reset assuming there is nothing sinister lurking.

Think mine is mk20. Well it is on hawkeye. Works like this: [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rxaxrNKRto"]YouTube - ‪Freelander 1 2001 v6 cold and warm engine start‬‏[/nomedia]

Well it's certainly plain enough when you look for it. Can honestly say I've never noticed it before, you live and learn as they say.
25k on a 2001 Hippo, wish I knew where to you find them?!
Don't do many miles. Got in it this week to see 28k miles on the clock.

Thanks everyone it seems there is there is something not right so i will let you know the out come asap

:):) OK guys and gals problem solved.:):)
I had the tank plugged in today and the ABS ecu was storing 4 faults
1 Loss of power from the ecu and 3 sensor faults, Andy from Tune at home reset the ABS ecu and the light sequence is as should be.
So a BIG thankyou to all of you for your much valued time and advice.
Hope you dont mind me plugging Andy at Tune at home Rochester in Kent as his Knowledge of the Tank is quite comprehensive .
Paul......

yes as above sounds like there is nothing wrong with your abs system, as mine does the same too, also states in the manual, that it wont go off until driven over 5mph.

Tell the MOT inspector to stop wasting your time.

Hi Jedi
I agree with you but the VOSA document states it should do a lamp check go off momentarily then back on before you do the 5 or so mph to extinguish .But i suppose the guy had to do his job properly,it also failed its mot on emissions so i had to have the tune at home in to confirm if it was the cat or oxygen sensor , it was the oxygen sensor. I now need to get the part number for the offending sensor and the only way i can see to get it off is by dropping the scuttle panel. :):)
