Aaron's 90 rebuild (round 3)

Another small update from yesterday, fell asleep before the photo's uploaded to photobucket and I could write it last night. .
Didn't get started until 3pm as I got roped into some other things, gardening and back to brothers house for a few other bits and bobs.
Plan was to get the seatbox ends changed, and then prepped and primed.





Job was easy enough to do and the YRM panels fitted lovely.
Hardest part of the job was the paint prep, getting the old glue residue off where the carpet had been.

Anyway, got it into primer late evening.



I had planned to leave it there, but had some tea and decided to just carry on and splash some top coat on it.



And did the rear spats.



Now that should be it for the paint, and the spats/seatbox where the last things to do, used every last drop of thinners/hardener last night, but.. I need to re-do the tub and bulkhead again as everything seems to be coming out the lighter colour now, luckily I've still got some paint left over to do it.
Could do with doing that asap as it's stopping me doing other jobs, just need to decide how/where/when I'm going to do it and then I can crack on with the rest of it.

Todays plan I think is to just get the battery box riveted on, been told I'm painting the fence today

Cheers mate Same goes for yours, how far on are you now? I'll be happy if I'm done for the end of the year, got a list as long as my arm of stuff to do at home that all needs doing in the summer and will no doubt eat up a lot of my time

Yep, ours was huge too puppies have grown loads now, bigger than I thought somehow..

Cheers, I thought the same bud, but I tried them on unpainted and wasn't sold on it.
I usually end up painting them black after trying colour coded and realising it's too much, but on the other hand I do much prefer them colour coded, but doesn't go with every colour, so I may end up changing them yet, but we'll see, not tried them on yet.

Cheers Nope, 300tdi ones are square, was just saying I don't mind 300tdi style ones the above are td5/tdci ones, just not a big fan of the original 200tdi ones.

Its slow going mate
trying to get hold of an auto electrician
tried to start it today, but think i have the ignition wiring wrong as the starter keep engaging and then it just died

I've got a picture of the ignition terminals on a 300Tdi. Not sure if they'll be the same as on your 200?

There you go two problems solved in one! paint the fence a nice shade of light green with the silhouette of a landrover in the middle and if they aren't happy you can point out the bits of floor and surrounding plants you painted without even being asked

Well didn't get too long on it today but got the seatbox done which is all I was really fussed about finishing.
Painted the underside satin black, used some self adhesive foam between the galv and ali and riveted it all into place.







And painted the underside of the floor pans while I had the paint out.



And then I had a swap around of Land Rovers and got the donor closer to the garage ready to pull the engine/gearbox out.
Had an hour or so pulling a few bits and bobs off, and getting trans tunnel etc out, hoping to have an hour or so on a night during the week and have it out before the weekend.

Are you going to strip it down and paint it?

Did you find that old phone somewhere in the engine bay??

Slow going here too mate, I might have a picture of the back of my ignition switch, I'll have a look or take one for you tomorrow when it's light out.
I wouldn't think the wiring would be too bad on yours being all new looms.

That's the plan mate minimum strip, clean, paint, and new gaskets/seals, timing belt etc.. But that might end up a full rebuild like last time I did an engine for this vehicle.
Will probably get it all stripped and see.

Nooo.. That's me bestest phone

Well it's out, had 2 hours last night, got transfer box out, gearbox out, everything else disconnected and engine ready to lift out.
Got home tonight, within half an hour the engine was out and sat on the garage floor, I then started measuring up for building materials, bugger didn't want to start just yet
Think it will be this weekends job to get it stripped down, also just looking at parts washers now, wanted one for a while and thinking now would be a good time to invest, oh and an engine stand, I wouldn't mind one of them too, did it hanging off the engine crane last time and don't fancy that again.

Swift work, marra. Yes, it's a bit unnerving having the engine swinging from one of those cranes. Not exactly steady either.

Aaron tell me something. Do you have more hours in your day than me, because you must have at least 30 hours in your day mate because I can not believe how much you get done in a day. Amazing.

I agree. In the time it takes me to think about one job you've done 3! Brilliant stuff.

he cheats.... he does more than one major rebuild per lifetime!

Certainly is mate doesn't help on my rough uneven drive either, although I do have more faith in them now than I used to have.

Cheers I wish I did mate, thing for me is, I don't go out and socialize, or have commitments with kids/family etc, this is my life and what keeps me going, so it where all my time is spent other than work

Cheers Steve Everything is pretty much flat out for me, I try not to think about too much and just get on with it.

Yes, I think most normal people would only do one I'm erm... Different..

So some more progress again today, and made a start stripping the engine down.
Made a start by removing all the ancillaries and got it on the engine stand.





Clutch looks like it has covered next to no miles, and is AP branded, so will probably stay.



And it was much cleaner behind the flywheel than expected.



And pulled the head off.



Had a quick look at the bores before I moved on, now I haven't really done many lr engine rebuilds and isn't something I've seen before.
But the cross hatching has 'worn off' on the sides, pictures, but not sure how much you can tell on that.






Turned the engine over and took the sump off.



And the ladder frame/oil pickup.



Started pulling all the pistons, shells are somewhat quite worn.

















Unbolted the big ends, again, all are quite worn.













Lifted the crank out and that was it for the day.







Tomorrows task is to have a bit of a tidy in the garage and start inspecting, measuring parts and components and see what is needed.
Although I do need to go and buy a bore gauge at some point.
New parts washer turned up today aswell, but need to sort some cleaning fluid for that too.

The shells are worn, all right. How many miles did it have on the clock?
Looking forward to watching the rebuild

Yes that was my initial thoughts upon seeing it James.
I'd best start looking into it and try and find someone local to do it I think.
