Pulled out of petrol station and heard the most horrid noise from the front. Big clunking noise and car jerking as it clunked. Felt like I was towing a porta cabin on a chain over speed bumps. pulled back into station and it got worse when turning. Recovery mechanic thinks it is the prop shaft and or the cv joint. Does that sound correct? If so, is it going to cost me a fortune to repair? Not very clued up on that sort of stuff. Gutted as I have just sorted my easy probs out too. Any help appreciated.

Sounds like it could be a cv and front axles need a special ball joint tool depending on what is found to need fixing`

+1 or even the centre VCU....

To test the VCU, jack up one wheel leaving the other three on the ground, place a looong breaking bar with the required socket onto one of the wheel nuts and lean on the bar.....it should move slowly and with reasonable effort, if it rotates freely, this is either a busted diff or half shaft, if it is locked solid, this is VCU locked up....

The VCU is the centre differential and permits different axle speeds during turning, if it locks up when cornering it has the effect of scrubbing tyres and things start to get very stiff and jerky in extreme cases....

Do the VCU test and if that passes muster, then start looking at the CV joints or half shafts.
