Just got back from a fantastic week in North Wales, good ole OS Maps did us proud! Had some great weather and found some brilliant lanes and areas to explore :)

Looks like a great trip, at the mo our grou[p is looking at a weekend trip to wales, not yet decided on where to go but that area looks a great place,
 
Did you just grab a map and go?? Am going to wales in September - any tips??

Basically yes! we started at the strata florida and then headed north and based ourselves around snowdonia national park :) Tips wise, spend some time checking out maps, OS is good in my opinion, we did quite a lot of road miles touring around but the roads and scenery are amazing so that was fine. If you're camping wild like we were (apart from the cabin we had use of) try and get to the area you want to camp in early-ish cos theres no guarantee you will find a good spot so you might have to look elsewhere and doing this in the dark is challenging!

We had an area in mind, basically we exhausted the maps of the area we had! :) we tried to link byways with scenic road sections and points of interest like lakes or mountains etc, or food/pub stops ;)

If anyone is planning a trip to mid/north wales feel free to contact me, I got a few routes and trails mapped and some awesome camping spots :)

That would be great if you would share some info!! I will pick up some OS Landranger maps asap... camping tips or places would be great! Can you camp anywhere or are there certain rules?
 
As long as you're sensible you can pretty much camp where you like just make sure that the area you're camping in is an area you're actually allowed in! :rolleyes:

there are very few areas where wild camping is allowed but saying that as long as your sensible and follow the basic rule of "set up late and leave early" you tend to be ok, me I tend to use a hammock/bash combo for wild camping and cook using a trangia rather than open fires as one of the things that really upsets landowners is open fires.

main thing is though:-

Tread Lightly
take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but memories.

have fun
 
Get the land owners permission is the right way unless it is common land. However as the guy above said usually set up late and go early leave little disturbance.

Dont be tempted by where you see someone else has had a fire as 1 if you get caught they wont care if you say someone else had had one before and 2 the owners probabyl aware that people are camping on that spot and may be on the lookout.

I tip I have heard of being used is to cut the turf and make a shallow dip to have the fire in. In the morning tidy up and replace turf or just take a fire pit or similar with you. I think ASDA used to sell a fire pit that would fit into your average 16" spare wheel or

Of course be careful sparks tents and dry woodland dont go well together.
 
Welcome to Landy Watch. Keeping an eye on your Land Rover are having a weekend bash bonfire night weekend in north wales
on the lleyn pininsuela with prizes and timed night stages, but before then on the 25/26th of this month there having a lane clearing weekend as some of the stages have,nt been used in 20 year or so so they are a bit oer grown. they have a local man in the area who runs preplotted routes at the end of each month as well worthchecking out if any ones interested
 
looks like a cracking trip guys, i think the best ones are where you just head off with a mate in your landy and return in a few days after lots of bacon butties and a good time!

and yeah, definitely what he said. we aim to get the tents up after dark, or after 6pm in the summer, and we're away by 7.30am next day. keep well hidden and BE SENSIBLE and you shouldnt run into trouble. cant say fairer than that tbh.

In Eire, Wales and Scotland there are no 'trespass' statutes.
For fires I just use camping stoves and gas. No mess that way.
If you want to practise your skills do it away from your camp area :)
 
We always tread lightly, it seems a bit dumb to find these fantastic places that would usually be unabtainable or take hours of hiking only to ruin the natural habitats with spinning MT tyres! As for cooking, we BBQ off the ground and the camp fires we had were built up on slate as to not catch any further or damage ground. We camped on common grounds mostly and did plenty of research in regards to rights of way. We're good like that! :)

I have no time for people that abuse natural areas for a quick laugh, people that litter and people that think its their god given right to do what they want when they want! Have some respect, dont ruin it for everyone else who actually gives a damn, and above all dont give Land Rover owners a bad name... we're mostly nice chaps! :rolleyes:
