Ok Guys,
Everyone thinks im mad but heres the story, i recently was talking to a friend about my defender wich i have just bought when he said he had an old series sitting in his barn gathering dust. Naturally i was interested, and he offered to sell it it to me. now the problem is, im no expert at all when it comes to restoration, pricing, mechanics. but i am looking at this as being my starter project:

He also has no idea how much its worth (but hes not thick) so i need enough cop on to be able to give him an educated offer, the chassis is not great to be honest, engine hasnt been running in about a year... body seems ok. any help would be great:) oh, by the way is it a series III or what?? haha

To give you an idea i paid £780 for a Series 2A with 12 months MOT, in reasonable (but no where near classic) condition.

For something in this condition i would pay £100 maybe. But if the chassis is rotten then go straight for a new galvanised chassis (if it is new it won't affect the points scheme for the tax free status of the vehicle) and build up from the new chassis using this for parts.

That said - i am nothing at all of an expert - i've only had mine for a few months and just make things up as i go along :)

P.S. - Love the paint scheme - hope you are keeping it!

running engine, crap chassis about £200
non runner crap chassis crap bulkhead, £100-£150

but on ebay as its been 'dry stored' probly £250- £350
what will he accept

i paid £350 for my 88" knowing absolutely bugger all about landrovers, no cab just a barely running vehicle that's tax exempt, i now believe i paid about £100 more than i should have being as i had to replace both dumbirons and both swivels to get it thru the mot ...

i've since replaced the springs and the engine along with 1 doortop and a full set of replacement secondhand tyres/wheels ...

so my guess going on limited info to value this truck is £200 tops (max' scrap value plus a little) preferably less if it requires paying for road tax and you just want a project...
£250 if it is tax exempt being as there's chassis work required (how much, could be an awful lot)

according to what i can see of the bulkhead it's a Series 3 (window hinges) so most likely in the £200 or less bracket....

how much you spend on repair/rebuild depends on what you can do, how much you are prepared to spend and what actually "needs" doing, no real estimate can be given without more indepth information

p.s.
there's nothing mad about wanting a Series project, it'll give you more grins than most things once you have it on the road

What I love about the series is it so understated, it doesn't seem to attract the same ire from the anti 4x4 brigade! Maybe they feel series owners are punishing themselves enough already!!

yea i would go for 100 quid. i doubt its worth more. it looks series III, as said the bulkhead, and the plastic grille, and the lights

given that, chances are unless its very early it isnt tax exempt, and therefore is worth less as a project vehicle.

and yea, i love series as well. about to buy a mint - as in as close to factory original as you will get - seriesIIa from 66. i also got a 58 series II in the garage! theres just something about them.

if anyone wants an early tax exempt land rover series III 109 in pretty good nick drop me a line! same goes for a 1982 very good nick lightweight!

Just noticed - Dash is in front of the wheel, not in the middle - doesn't that make it series 3 for definite?

(along with all the other pointers people have made)

No changing the dash board is not impossible, so it doesn't confirm things, but everything points to a Series III

offered him €200 (im in Ireland) And listen to what he said... completely pokerface, 'no way!! im not taking any less than €950 for it! i dont know much about defenders but its a brilliant condition collectors item.' So i laughed at him and wished him good luck with finding some eejit to take it off his hands for that kind of money!! Looks like he is thick after all! haha

Do it, Do it now!

200 notes is a good starting point in my opinion. As for starter classic/ resto project, a Landy has to be the best. Everything bolts on, parts are cheap although quality is declining rapidly, and if you bugger up the alignment with chassis repairs, you can just cut out your errors and start agian. No need for expensive paint jobs as if you go off road you scratch it to buggery anyway. Just get some good coaching paint and a nice roller, wait until the sun comes out and hey presto.
Galv chassis is defenately the way to go if the chassis is poo though.

did ya miss the bit bout him wanting 950? :D

950 ! blimmy, Yeh I missed that. Another one of those " if its old its worth a few quid".
Perhaps it should be pointed out to the vendor that high survival rates usually means low prices, Look at Scimitars, Rover P5s and P6s. MGBs and early 2 door escorts are the exception......

Shame really, it will probably then just sit there for 10 years and ten be scrapped.
