there should be circular drain hole at the bottom of the a post (sunroof drain)
if it resembles a rust hole and not a drain hole, then yes it should fail, as its excessive corrosion within 12" of a body mount.
depends how bad it is and how keen your mot tester is

They have little holes. If it's a big scabby it will be fine.
Mine were completely rotted off at the bottom, until I repaired them

neither did we.
the disco looked mint apart from the door pillar bottoms on the near side. (A & B pillar)
took the plastic trims off to clean area prior to welding and found that lot.
crapets up and found a load more.
doors off to make it easier and 57 hours later, lots of cutting grinding and welding, ready for mot.

and front suspension bushes.

yup, scary moment when you take them trims off and see what the tinworm has been eating.

Don't be afraid to thoroughly check for rust using sharp strikes with eg a screwdriver. The MoT tester will go slightly more gently, but if he senses corrosion, will keep chipping away until he either reaches solid metal or goes through. No point in not finding it. Also, remember that fixing corrosion is not for the benefit of the MoT tester, its because its a safety critical area should the worst happen (severe collision and the seatbelt stops you being catapaulted through the windscreen.

just as an update it failed with a hole in th esill by the seat belt mounting on the near side.. garage called on Sat and said the whole side has gone and they're going to fabricate a whole new sill.... I wonder what this'll cost.. |I trust the garage though as they'rev done work for me in the past and have a very good reputataion locally

why? the price of a pre-fabricated sill is peanuts - at least it is against getting one fabricated.... Can they make it for less than £20?

As a matter of interest guys how far down the A post does the drain tube for the sunroof run
far enough down to melt when its welded.....

I have inner and outer easy on sill repair sections going spare, bought from froggats land rover and never used.
Can sell both for £50 delivered, and it'll cut down your labour costs.
Need to eBay them anyway!
As for those pillar repair sections, they look very nice.
Bit dear though, 100 quid to do all four. I simply chopped up bits of sheet, welded it all together and ground it smooth.
Good for the uninitiated though I guess
