Can the swan neck be replaced with a standard flange mount towball design. I don't want to replace the whole towbar, just the removable extension. And if the answer is yes, anyone got one for sale or want to do a swap

With the EC tightening up on towbar specifications, only type approved towbars must be supplied and fitted..this means that they can't be modified.
In short...either remove and fit a "Fixed towball" type or stick with the original..otherwise you could get done.

Only applies to vehicles registered after 1st Aug 1998.

Hiya Pikey..that's correct but surely modifying a towbar in any wayis a can of worms. For what they cost, it's far better than seeing your trailer/caravan disappearing from view through the rear view mirror.
I reckon that if an accident was caused and it was due to towbar failure, especially if it was modified, serious questions would be asked irregardless of whether it was a pre or post 1998 car

If you want a normal flange on, you'll have to change the crossmember that sits inside the bumper skin. roundabout £150 new.

Aye couldn't agree more I've got a Dicky Bates drop plate on the 90 with a 3.5tonne ball and pin hitch, on it. But lots of peeps are fitting these southdown detachable tow hitch type jobbies. And I've heard a couple of peeps say there illegal when in reality they aren't. So long as ya vehicle is pre Aug 98.

I wasn't intending to modify anything, I just wanted to know if Land Rover supplied an alternative to the swan neck.
Yes a Land Rover multi-height plate but it cost so much money that you'll prefer to change of towhitch.

A pic of mine with a MaxxRaxx Bike Carrier. I don't know the PN code but may do a research on Microcat for you
