A new problem, ACE Warning light!!

Hi, On my way home just the ACE light started chiming, yesterday i did notice a slight oil leak under the back of the car, Im presuming these may be connected.

Whats the common problems with this and is it going to cost me a fortune? Also it says in the book to not drive the car, Would it be ok in your opinion to drive it to my local garage (7miles away) or would this cause more damage.

What colour was the ACE light - red or yellow.

If you use the vehicle you run a big risk of the ACE pump seizing up and costing lots more.

Sounds like you have a leaking rear ACE pipe.

Have you checked the fluid level in the ACE part of the reservoir?

The reservoir is in two compartments - the front is for pas: the rear is for ACE.

I know this sounds bad but i didnt even know there was one, Im going to look now and check the level, Is there a specific type of oil it takes?

Edited: Just checked and the level is on minimum but there seems plenty in there, It smells like power steering fluid...

There is a type of oil specified "Land Rover low temp ACE & pas fluid) available from guess where?

However, it you just want to top-up to get to the garage you could use atf, so long as you tell the garage when they fit the new pipes, to empty and refill the system with the correct fluid.
 
Just done this very job myself and it cost me about £200 in total.

Its not a hard job but routing the pipes through the chassis was a bit fiddly.

Once the new pipes are fitted topup the PAS fluid and go for a drive down a bendy rough road and give it a bit of a thrashing, make the suspension work hard, stop after a couple of miles and check the fluid, top up if nessesary and drive another few miles and check fluid again. When the fluid stops dropping you will have bled the system, check again in day or so just to make sure, In total i think the system uses about 1.6l of pas fluid.

You are suppsed to get rover to use there computer to do the system bleed OR a nanocom but to be honest a bendy rough roud does the same thing and its cheaper :)

Thanks mate, Theres a specialist not far away from me so ill give them a ring and see what they would charge me as im really busy at work now summers on its way. If its gonna be fortunes ill have to make time to try myself.

Is the red warning light just like a level indicator or does it mean a possible fault with the pump?
 
If the Red light is on you have NO fluid left in the system and you need to stop and turn the engine off otherwise the ace pump is running dry and it has been known to seize and cause belts to snap and go through the radiator :eek:, After saying that I drove 3 miles(had no choice) with it on red and i did no damage that i'm aware of

If its amber you are low and should topup ASAP.

I've heard dealers charging £500 - £600, you may find cheaper in your area.

I am no way a mechanic but i found it easy enough and it took maybe 3-4 hours and the thought of saving a few hundred quid was a good incentave to have a go.

Is not just a level indicator.......If U fill the reservoir and the red light is still on it's probably a problem with the pressure in the system(it'll need deeper investigation)......if the light goes out then go with it just stop and check the fluid level time to time and refill it...........if it's a leaking pipe or actuator U can use the cheapest transmission fluid untill U fix it.......after that don't forget to replace the ACE filter too.

Cheers mate, I only asked as when I checked the level it was on minimum so I could see fluid and thought that maybe a yellow light and red was something else more serious, ill try and get some fluid tomorrow and top it up and see if it goes out, then ill get it booked in for new pipes.

Well, Just got some oil from LR and topped the level up and it started with no warning, So I took it for a drive about 3 miles and it was fine. So fingers crossed I just need the small leak fixed and that's all.

If the leak is from a pipe then unfortunately the only effective "fix" is to replace it.........there is up to 100bar pressure when ACE is working so you can't just improvise cause it won't last.

I understand that mate, I'm booking it in for some replacement pipes, I meant it that a top up and the lights gone out so the pump should be fine and my only worry is to replace the pipes
