hi to the forum,

Just a quick message from a new member & a new Disco Td5 Mk2 Owner. :) Thanks to the forum, I've resolved my new ruff running Disco. The symptoms were lack of power, and a juddering effect felt when coasting with no acceleration applied. Fault resolved by removing ECU and checking RED PLUG. Oil deposit found. Cleaned plug and socket of ECU end by dipping in WD40 solution to remove oil. Replaced ECU and road tested. Power returned and judder no longer present. :amen:

The Silver Streak is now burning up the roads: Woooosh

My question is: Can someone tell me how oil gets there? The cable loom was dry with no indication of oil being present.

I'd quite like to know how this happens as well as mine has oil in the connectors, unfortunately cleaning them didn't resolve the problem so she's in the garage now.

What you could do with doing is changing the injection harness which runs through the rocker cover. The wires eventually allow the passage of oil into the plug and down the rest of the harness to the ECU. The 2 rubber o rings on the plug also become brittle and allow oil in the same way.
The part you need is AMR6103 and costs about (£35)

if you unbolt the rocker cover you will see the injector harness. The rubber grommet that forms the seal to prevent oil escaping fails. The oil then tracks down the inside of the injector harness until it reaches the ecu. A new modified injector harness is about £40.

Thanks Ratty, For the information on completing this job. My RED plug was just like the one in the pictures. I'm off now to purchase a modified injector harness.

My thanks to everyone that replied, especially to Ratty... Cheers Silver Streak

Hi Silver Streak,
Greetings from New Zealand. Make sure you get rid of the residual oil that is still in the second half of the loom from the plug in the cylinder head to the ECU. The best way is a litre of meths a small funnel and some patience. Open a gap in the plastic insulation in the wiring loom where it connects to the cylinder head plug. Insert the end of the funnel and pour the meths in. You have to flush out the oil that has accumulated in the loom otherwise it will continue to dribble into the ECU connector. It takes about 20-30 minutes to flush a litre of meths through. Once you have done that and replaced the injector harness in the head you will have no more problems.

Hi Ratty / Hawkertempest,

Checked the wiring loom tonight, from ECU to cylinder head plug. Cylinder plug is oily. But rest of loom appears to be dry; no oil. The loom goes down low down beside engine before U-turning up beside coolant res. Cant understand how oil can manage to track up loom; at least 12". Have ordered harness loom so will fit it anyway. Removed Battery, battery plastic mounting. Lots of oil found underneath. Oil residue is certainly coming from area of ECU, through holes in mounting. Once I fit harness intend to plaster outside red plug with vasoline so to stop future oil ingress. Any suggestions as to stop this happening again would be appreciated? Cheers Silver Streak
