Can anyone help me please?

I got a rangerover lse 1993 this week and there are a couple of problems.

1. The front spotlights dont appear to work, even though i pressed the correct button.

2. The rear windscreen wiper doesnt work, although the wash does.

3. The heater blows out air but its only cold air that it blows out.

4. The gas conversion - i dont think its been serviced since its been fitted, and it doesn't automatically change over (its a bedini conversion, and i have found a company that has a specialist in them but its a bit of a drive away)

5. The conversion will run the gas but apparently its very 'lumpy' and stalls, from what i have been told it could be the air filter or a solenoid, does anyone know anything about the conversions on them?

everything else seems to be really good with it though, my brother checked this out when i went to look at it and he has said its a solid motor, and got a good engine in it.

I did used to have a discovery but changed it to a Kia rio (more fool me) which was written off a couple of weeks ago, so i went back to what i wanted. just these little bits i have picked up on that i need to try and sort out.

any help would be good,

Jan (l4ndy4ng3l)

The foglights are actually driving lights which only work with full beam on,this took me a while to suss out when i first had a classic

Where are you? There might be a local willing to come have a butchers for you or maybe even be able to recommend someone to look at your gas kit.

if you could give a bit more detail on the gas kit and mebbe piccys it would help lots, i suspect the gas kit could use the simple lambda controlled stepper motor, your brother sounds like he knows a bit about cars, he'll probably understand if you let him know it acts like a traditional carb, allowing more fuel through when needed and closing off at idle with the stepper adjusting to keep the car at idle revs of around 6 or 700 rpm.

you should find a ecu for the lpg kit and the stepper will be connected both to this and the air intake via a tube. follow the wires to find the ecu!!

the fact it wont run properly just means it needs setting up, there will be software and a cable to connect to a laptop available to set it all up. you may also need to adjust the vapouriser ( big round thing under bonnet somewhere connected to the stepper via a tube) similar again to a traditional carb in its operation but coupled with the stepper makes for a complicated (at times) procedure but is easily tackled by the diy'er.

if the kit has a manual valve in place of the electrical stepper then disregard most of the above!!!:D:D:D:D:D:doh::doh:

a kia rio ffs.thank god it was written off.:D:D;)

the system from what I have found out is a bedini...there is a specialist in leeds that deals with this (they took it over after the other UK dealer went bump as there wasnt a uk delaer in this and Bedini needed one)

I live on the outskirts of manchester so its at least an hours drive to get it there (which in a 4.2 v8 isnt going to be cheap!

I did try to run it on gas last night after speaking to the company in leeds, however it cut out on my whilst driving down the road, then wouldnt start on petrol until after a couple of minutes and there was also a very strong smell of gas about.

thanks for the tip on the driving lights, i thought they were fog lights!

the other thing i have not worked out yet is the back windscreen wiper is still not working....could that be a fuse or maybe wiring????

thank

Rear wiper problem. I have the same problem. Never bothered looking at it though.
It could be a fuse, broken/dodgy switch, broken wiring, loose connection, faulty motor or a short somewhere.

Check the fuses,
To test switch use a multi meter. (or a battery and bulb).
Same with wiring.
No idea on motor testing.

Heater problem could be:

  1. Lack of coolant or airlock in heater matrix/hoses
  2. One of the motorised air valves (blend motors) stuck or u/s
Cheapest to check and deal with first would be coolant/airlock senario if needed refill according to RAVE, blend motors a real pain to get to and expensive.

Hi.
If you have the little brain (Multi function unit) attached to fuse box which i think you do then it may be this which is at fault or the wash wipe has seized.....i bypassed mine as it seemed to be poorly and unable to figure out what it was operating. After messing around with it it seemed to not be supplying an earth for the wiper motor, i conected an earth for it and all is good. I have a electrical manual here for my 94' soft dash so if you need any help give me a shout.

Cheers Nick.

Item 1. Spotlights, or whatever you prefer to call them; Check their relay, it’s below the glove compartment, sits atop a small hinged metal tray with a number of other relays and the central locking control unit attached. With the headlights on high beam, hold your hand on this frame you should be able to feel a click vibrate it when switching the spotlight dash switch on/off. You’ll need a 10mm socket (from memory) to undo the nut that holds the front of the tray in place to access the relay it should be the second relay back from the fire wall, providing someone hasn’t interfered with it’s position amongst the others.

Item 2. Rear Wiper, they share a 20Amp fuse with the Air conditioning and Sunroof, in satellite cluster 2, fuse 3 to the right of steering column under dash. They also share a 10Amp fuse with the side mirrors, in the main panel cluster, fuse 15. The relay is behind the plastic panel to the left of the passenger’s feet, you’ll need to undo the bonnet pull handle to remove the panel, the relay should be the green one with 5 pins.

Item 3. Could it be the heater valve operation, it’s to the left of the plenum chamber, maybe it’s not opening to let coolant through, or maybe the heater radiator under dash is damaged and previous owner blocked the coolant lines to prevent it from leaking in the cabin.

I have no knowledge of gas but hope the above is of some benefit anyway.

Regards,

Fellow LSE Owner.

There seems to be few different fusebox setups depending on year range, the fusebox layout sticker on the back of my fusebox cover is totally wrong to the fusebox so i'm guessing the lids been swapped somewhere in its life,my rear wiper stopped working suddenly a few weeks ago and even when it was switched off it was making a strange clicking noise.I couldn't find a fuse anywhere to disable the motor and had to take the n/s/r speaker out and unplug the motor itself.

I have had quite a few more problems that have taken over the priority of getting the original bits I posted sorted out.

firstly the sphere seals on the front went (about a month after i bought it) when the wheels were taken off it turned out the spheres had been tightened up that much they were pitted and one pulled the drive shaft out with it.

two sphere kits later and it was sorted. we had to jump start it off a truck as it had been stood for that long but it was fine.

two days after i had got it back it failed to start again. got a mutlimeter tested the battery tried charging it but gave up and bought a new one. still nothing, checked the ignition coil and replaced that also. still nothing until i got the lead from the coil to the dizzy. worked fine again for about a week and a half.

the it died again.....by this point i was actually began to shed a few tears seeing as i was stuck at traffic lights at a main junction. got it back to the garage needed a new starter motor so I got that ans also a service kit.......the air filter looked like it had been on since new and never changed! it was blacker than the colour of the tyres.....changed that, the fuel filter, oil filter and spark plugs....not sure if the starter motor they have sent is fully correct or if the automatic choke is sticking out cos its still toiling on starting and burning fuel.

however, driving along and the back end fell down near enough onto the wheels.....took it back to garage, eventually got two air bags for it, had them fitted but it appears that there is no computer around here that will reboot the compressor as that is still in hardfault mode....

I dont want to get a coil spring conversion on it as I like the air suspension....but from what i can gather the eas is a fairly old one, does anyone have any ideas as to what it would cost to get a new pump for it or to give up and get the conversion i really don't want....

please if anyone can help i would appreciate it...

Ta

Dont worry mate , its just how it goes when you first get a classic unless you are very lucky!

The lse with that air ride is a bit more risky than the standard one but you will get there in the end, well almost-there is always something to sort out on a landrover and they are easier than the P38!

my LSE is on springs and i think its just as good on them as air. handles nicely, and great over the fields when i go shooting. not so good if you have got ronnie corbett legs though as it is a bit of a climb up, but for 150 quid the springs was well worth it. beats the endless hassle of EAS

We have tried a by[ass method I saw on the tinterweb but even that doesn't seem to have worked from what my mechanic has told me. Although i did download some reboot system onto my laptop but I need to find a cable that I can adapt to see if i can reboot the eas as no one around here seems to have the correct system round near where I live. The EAS on my rangie is a dunlop system and not the more recent one and every round here seems to have systems for the more recent ones.

The reason i have and want to keep the eas is because i have a few family members that do have ronnie corbett legs, or had bad backs/joints and I like to be nice sometimes and lower the suspension before I get in.

the annoying thing is I am now losing the will to live where its concerned, I have had it since november 2009 and managed to be able to actually drive for about a 6 weeks as its always got something happen to it.

I am hoping once i sort this out I will be able to drive it for a while after that!

the EAS is the the only major problem with LSE that i have encountered, since 1992 when they first arrived on the market.its a shame you are not nearer to me as i have loads of parts from breaking 2 of these models. mainly as back up for my old girl. at very least to solve some if not all your other faults you originally listed. they are a lovely car when all is right with them, i have owned my curent one for 2 years now and has been faultless in everyway, except for a spark plug issue. see my album to have a look at her in all her glory or on the range rover gallery.
