Volcano's belch out all kinds of crap when they erupt

power stations and basically everything the human race creates pollutes..

It would be far more environmentally safe if we all stopped making cars for a few years and just keep driving the ones we have..

Just my 2p

Then the pollution of creating the vehicles would relax..

I agree with the human side of it. However, don't think we can quite put natural activities of the Earth in the same class as, plastic bags, vehicle (all types) emissions, pollution of land and water, destruction of habitat, etc, etc, etc.
If I could use public transport , I would use the Golden Girl a lot less. If we all do something , rather than saying , ' oh my not doing 'x' wont make a difference', maybe a difference could be made.

It may well be but, there would be a shortage of second hand cars and, the price would rocket.

Yes i agree..

However the earth is still going to be polluted as much if not more by hybrids and electric..

It's not the running/driving pollution of the Electric car that's the problem, its the manufacturing and the eventual recycling pollution that is the problem IMO

Most of the materials needed for the batteries need to be mined out the ground.

And as said by saint above, the recycling of such a vehicle would mast likely be an environmental disaster lol

I'm sure this craze will pass, like the diesel craze of the 90s.. ;)

My weekly trips to AMS are via Taxi to Heathrow (usually Prius), and short flight. Is this greener that driving my P38 to AMS ??

No....technically....but yes practically....

Aircraft pollute more than your P38 would on the trip, BUT, because you are travelling with 120 other people in the aircraft the actual 'pollution per person per trip' is substantially less than if all 120 people drove their P38's to the red light district too.....:D

Melting ice is exposing many mineral rich soils which are then being washed in to the sea effecting it's composition ... this may well be the tipping point ...

Into un-recoverable cycles of extremes..

I'd say its too late to change anything, if there is indeed anything happening..

People will believe anything they're told from a greater source.

It'll take more than the planned period to get rid of so called Emission belching vehicles and equipment, can't see everything changing overnight.

Probably in a few hundred or maybe thousand years we'll feel the repercussions ;)

The earth has always gone through cycles - we didn't start it off - but we certainly have sped up the process....but the earth will always swing the other way and the future generations will moan about global cooling....and that their solar powered space hoppers are drainingg the suns energy cooling the planet down again.....

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one state to the next - if the Earth warms up...ice melts, this cools the oceans, this cools the Earth, the Ice forms again, the Seas warm, the planet warms etc etc etc....Different gases get released, causing different effects - the Earth will then swing the other way again and these gases will be in decline until a certain point when the cycle will start again....

Man(and woman)kind hasn't helped and may throw the cycle out of hack a bit - but the Earth will compensate and go the other way until it finds its norm again.....

Energy is a constant....

It's the salinity that drives the deep ocean current, this in turn moves the water from hotter places to cooler places and so on ...

True, but also, once the salinity (and hence density) of the water column changes to a point it is unsustainable, the balance will shift in the opposite direction and the reverse will occur.

Warm water is less dense - but this allows it to hold more dissolved salts and organics, and as such will actually be denser than cold water which can hold less dissolved salts etc. as the cold water is displaced by warm water, it will then start to move about and you can get drifting currents, but over the next how ever many millennia, the currents will shift again back to how they were 'when we were alive' and the oceans and currents will change again.....

As I say, we didn't start this cycle of change off, we may have sped it up, but we will never be abel to stop it - ever.....energy is a constant regardless of anything anyone does.

These events may cause man(and woman)kind to become extinct, thats life....look at the other populators of this little rock of ours, we may think we are smarter then them and that we can halt this natural cycle....but we can't. What we should do is try and get it back to its more normal frequency of oscillation - but we sure as hell can't stop it - and we have to except that in a few millions of years we will no longer be here and the next tenant of this planet will take over - maybe they will prefer it warmer - until that ends at the next ice age, and they will probably be trying to develop V8 powred space boards to generate greenhouse gases again to keep the planet warm....but they will fail also, and the Earth will carry on doing what it does.....she is a harsh mistress, but we cannot tame her swings in mood!

I agree, but must point out there are boundary layers where the cold water and warmer water does not mix, so nutrients from the surface layers do not fall to the sea floor to nourish the lifeforms lower down ...
