94 300TDI Disco - Upgrading to Vented Front Discs

Discs and Pads have just about had it on my Truck, its a 94 Disco 300Tdi, with all standard front brakes at present.

I get trouble with brake fade occasionally, and seeing i need new discs it seems the logical thing to upgrade the whole lot now. I know I need different calipers, but I was wondering if anyone can tell me which type i need and what model this setup would have come from. (Late 110 or LSE Classic Range Rover have both been suggested)

Has anyone else done this type of conversion? I dont want to go down the route of performance discs and pads, experience tells me that these are not ideal for day to day driving.

In '98 the Dicovery went from a solid front disc to a vented front disc. Does anyone know if the newer rotors and calipers are a direct bolt on? Can someone point me to technical specs? If it was Disco I to Disco I it would probably be a no brainer, but since it is Disco II to Disco I there is no telling what else was changed.

The front discs on my 93 rangerover classic tdi are vented but i think all rangerovers after 1990 were,There are 2 brakepipes per caliper and they are 4 piston jobbies,The front hub/wheelbearing setup looks slightly diferent betwen my rangerover and my mates 91 disco with solid discs so if your going for the rangerover setup i'd get the whole lot complete rather than try and use your existing hubs.
 
I don't know much about it but I read somewhere that for some markets Disco I's were fitted with vented discs because of restrictions on using asbestos in the brake pads. mko9 says they went vented from '98 but it could be that export Discos had vented brakes earlier than that meaning you should be able to get specific Disco parts. Just a thought...
 
I have been looking at parts in the US, and the Disco's there used solid rotors until '97 then vented rotors from '98 onwards.
 
Firstly I'd say just drain and replace all the brake fluid and fit standard pads and discs. Secondly WTF is a Rotor this is a UK site not a bloody Merkin one stick to invading oilrich middle east coutries if ya must but don't be coming round here and trying it on.

Thanks for an entirely worthless post. Nobody is asking about bleeding the brakes and replacing the pads in this thread. Nor does anyone car about your opinion of world events in the Discovery section of the forum. ;)

did you not consider that e might av been suggesting something that's likely to be the cause of your brake issue?
 
OOOhh not on here as well I've just come off LRUK where some ones been having a go at me. Anyone got the number for the samaritans??

For your information you thick ****ting moron Brake fluid degrades over time. it is also hydroscopic (it absorbs moisture) and this leads to brake fade. The braking system on a standard discovery works fine when it's new and therefore commonsense something appear to need. means that if you replace fluid, pads and discs you will have renewed most of the braking system and the chances are that this will cure your problem. However id you want to waste a fortune upgrading something that wqorks perfectly fine. then don't let me stop you.

Oh Deary Me .....

Brake fade ......

Pads overheat - layer of smoke keeps pads off disc = bugger all brakes

Old fluid with water dissolved in it - fluid heats up in caliper - water boils to steam bubbles - bubbles compress - pedal hits the deck = bugger all brakes.

Moral .... replace pads and fluid IMMEDIATELY upon suspicion of fade, and consider fitting pads with a harder lining that will withstand heat better.

DS-11 pads from Ferodo used to be the bees' knees.

Say sorry to the man for rubbishing his helpful reply.

HYGROSCOPIC with a GEE by the way ...

A hygroscopic material is one which attracts moisture from the atmosphere.

Like brake fluid, f'rinstance.

If your discs and pads have just about had it dont ya tink dis is da cause of ya fading brakes. Take d advice of d udder chaps and replace the brakes wid good quality standards and replace the brake fluid, hey presto, good brakes
