90 td5 as my everyday car ? Am I crazy?

I've got a 300tdi and a TD5.

Both are great, but the TD5 is a lot quieter and more refined, if that's what you are looking for. My TD5 is a 110. The 110 rides better due to the longer wheelbase, but the missus's 300tdi 90 is more fun, as it is more direct.

Both vehicles will easily hold 65-70 mph on the motorway if you want. But the TD5 is quieter.

The TD5 has more creature comforts and for day to day driving l prefer it. But it depends what you want from a Defender.
The 300tdi is more agricultural, and has less technology. The gear change is in my opinion nicer than the TD5.

I don't think if ever touch a ford again it's felt cheap inside and had a fair few problems with it.

used everyday, its been ok for 2 years until last week when it had a few expensive issues, all sorted now hopefully

For a moment I thought your door was on fire :D and was thinking that's not a good pic to use as an advocate for daily driving.

Many people Landys here as daily drivers. Though the island is not that big, daytime temperatures soar here. Last few weeks my X5 was registering between 31 to 34 degrees.

One of my neighbours has a 300tdi CSW which he drives really hard and it's his daily driver. It's a 99 and never missed a beat apart from regular wear and tear at 280,000 km on the clock. He is the first owner and flogs this poor Landy to death every day.

Forgot to mention, the army here still use the Landys as their main and only feet

I had a 08 1.8tdci focus before this and that was a bag of ****e!!! Is the td5 the best for motorway driving with abut of fun at the weekends then.

I'll be brutally honest here....

If you want to do motorway driving and want a greater degree of comfort and refinement then Land Rover did listen.

So go and buy one of these instead:

Or a RRC/D1.

They are 99% as capable as a Defender, but offer more creature comforts, refinement and better high speed capability.

I don't think I could do that having one of them would be like sleeping with a German Shepard (discovery)instead of sleeping with the best looking woman in the world (defender)

I used to drive a 110 v8 every day. 50 miles. Absolutely bloody loved it. But then the v8 is silky smooth and sounds soooooo good.

Loved it so much I decided to build a bigger, better one - my ongoing 4.6 project ;)

Black roof in a non air con defender is going to be sweaty bollacks time.
Using a defender as an every day car fall into the following categories
200tdi you are well hard and nothing bothers you
300tdi you paid to much for it and are therefore a ####
td5 you are in fact a full time cum swallowing poofta:D
Apart from that they are crap cars:rolleyes:

Haha nothing wrong with German Shepards just is rather have the best looking woman in the world haha.bwith the black gloss roof it will keep me warm in the winter aswell (in my head )

In the winter stopping the condensation dropping on your head and keeping the side windows clear will be very high up your list.

Looking at getting my first defender in the coming weeks. But I will use it as my everyday car! And when I mention it to people they look at me as if I've just said ive just jumped from the moon in shorts.

Am I really that crazy for wanting one as a everyday car ?
ok long as you're not in a hurry

better as a second car

but doable

Yes, but it's not the Land Rover that slows you down, it's the other traffic. If you do long journeys in the early hours of the morning then you can make amazingly good progress if you keep the needle at or around the speed limit and keep up the momentum.

My Mrs used to use her 300TDi 90 for her daily drive until I took it apart :D
34 miles round trip to work and back each day. Loved it and I'm under a bit of pressure to get the rebuild finished as she wants it back ASAP

I've had a different experience with Ford TDCi engines to those mentioned earlier in this thread. I started with a 1.8 TD Focus estate (V Plate) and it was great. Got a 02 plate Focus hatch 1.8TDCi and it was like a rocket on rails - loved it and had separation anxiety when I traded it in for a 2.0TDCi Mondeo Estate 07 plate. (two of my lads played cricket and I couldn't get them and the kit bags in the hatch) That estate was great too, daily drive and took us all over Europe camping never a squeak out of it. Until! The clutch plate rubbers started to go :( Sold that and now have a 12 plate 2.0TDCi Mondeo Estate and no problems so far.

Agreed, i have driven a discovery (which i actually quite liked), to a citroen C4 that i simply cannot get used to. Then, i drove a defender 90. Nothing else after that.
It's just such a good little car to drive, contrary to what people say.
