90 defender...What engine?

I'm going to look at a p reg 90 defender in the next few day. i've ask the seller (a friend of my cousin) what engine it has and his reply was that he didn't know. I'm not surprised I've met him and know he doesn't know much about the things he has, anyway back to my question. what engine options were available for a p reg. it is diesel so that will rule out v8's.
Having had lots of electrical problems with my td5 disco i'm hoping it will be a 200 or 300.

thats good. is there anything particular i need to be checking. where will the chassis number be on the chassis so I can check it.

front drivers outer side chassis leg just in front of where pas box is secured,should be a plate on the passenger side dash visible through windscreen as ell as plate on brake pedal box,main thing to look corrosion of body and chassis look over it well

I thought windscreen visible chassis number was td5 onwards?

My 96 90 300 has it in the window
