I drive a defender 90 300tdi, and was wondering what the best way to change the clutch would be? Iv never changed a clutch before but think il manage nae bother. Is it do-able to just drop the gearbox? Or do yi have to lift the engine out the road?

Thanks for any help.

easiest method is leave the crossmember in under the gearbox remove the rear propshaft disconnect the electrics from the gearbox ie: reverse light switch then undoo the engine from the gearbox and the gearbox from the chassis (leaving the crossmember in ) the gearbox should slide back enough to get in and change the clutch

top tips

remove the clutch slave cylinder and wrap it with duct tale to ensure the pushrod desnt come out ( its a cnut to get the seals back in without them leaking ) this will save a lot of time and effort bleeding the bugger back up aswell

also watch out for the bellhouseing bolts on the top side of the engine theyre gits to get at use a wabbler behind the socket and roughly 18" to 2 foot of extension bars to get into them its a bit of a fiddly process but once your on them theyre easy

above all if in doubt put the kettle on calm down and then carry on :D:D:D:D

Like it!

Do you still need to remove the gearbox tunnel from inside to allow the gear lever assembly to move back with the gearbox? Trying to picture it:eek:

forgot to mention that i normally get me helper to do it but yes it needs to come out if your at all worrie about it falling just sit the brake drum on a trolley jack or if yer poor an axle stand on a skateboard

its far better than breaking your back trying to lift it back up to the original position :D:D

Spot on, cheers just wanted to make sure I was gonna do it right.

I just ordered a new clutch tonight. Hopefully be here by the weekend to do on Saturday!

Cheers.

not for engine but for gear box you hang chain from drivers side top transfer box to gear box bolt and use it through passenger door to lift gearbox enough to remove mounts and lower it down makes refitting box relatively easy ,usually best just to jack drivers side wheels off ground to give clearance and aid removing props

I've just posted a walk through, I'm on my phone or I would post a link. Search my posts or defender clutch change. Its easy enough
