Hi Guys,
OK i have a dilema...

My Freelander TD4 is booked in for a 84k service at my local Landrover dealer this coming Friday.

Do i.....

A. Let them use their standard semi synthetic oil as per normal service.

or

B. Buy some Castrol 'Edge Sport' and let them fill her up with this.

** They have told me if i prefer to supply my own oil it's not a problem and they will use this instead.

I naturally want what's best for me landrover, any suggestions....

I think oil is oil. If they charge more for their oil than the one you want, then go with the one you want & make sure they give you back the remainder in the bottle. Also a little advice on screenwash, quite a few main dealers love to charge stupid money to top up your screenwash. Some Main dealers charge the price of a 10 litre bottle of the stuff, when all they have done is put in .5 of a litre. So top up your screen wash yourself! Personnally, i would never bring my hippo to a main dealer ever again, they are all rip offs.

Not sure, And quite frankly as long as you put in the specified oil (You should find this in the handbook) then it should be fine. LR say to change the oil every 12 K, but i do it every 5 K myself and never had a problem in that department. All oil has a certain amount of cleaning agents in them and by doing it every 5 K it keeps the engine clean. IT is so simple to do and really is not expensive either. I agree with Shutty. Do it yourself.

definitely agree. what seems daunting with the freelander is having to drop the undertray off. next on my list of things to do is change the oil, kind of wary of doing it for the first time, but once i've had the undertray off and done it once, I know it'll be a piece of p*ss next time.
Oh and having to have a 36mm socket to get the oil filter out (on the td4 anyway)

To take the undertray off is easy 10 bolts and 2 screws. Really easy. Make sure you have a filter wrench- Not expensive, and a new copper washer for the sum plug, filter and oil. Always smear a bit of oil on the rubber sealing ring on the filter prior to filling up. hand tight and then one more turn with the filter wrench. Dont over tighten. always place 0.5 litre less than specified. Turn engine on to fill up the filter, leave 5 minutes and check level. and top up untill the full mark on dipstick. Some people swear by the engine flush stuff you can get, but i would only do it every 20 / 30 k

Don't trust the dealer, the mechanic working on your car will nick your oil and fill your car with what comes out of the pumps.

Well i have got had the freelander service by Landrover Dealer and i must amdit it does feel a whole lot better and smoother although i am not impressed with the £394 it cost me for an 84K service.
And to think that was a clear service with no faults etc, imagine if they started finding things wrong etc. omg

Thats a joke!!!!!

84k is an oil and filter change and a check over, thats it!!!! (basically a 12,000 service)

oh, and a pollen filter

yep that's about it, the only relief i have brought out of it is the fact that some middle aged - elderly gentleman came out with nice landrover overalls on etc and looked wealthy with knowledge as opposed to some spotty greasy 17 yr old lad in a back street garage where it could of ended up.
Still very dear just for a main dealer service and official stamp etc.

oh well

i hpe yu aint callin our Clutchy "some spotty greasy 17 yr old lad in a back street garage" - he wont be happy wiv that.

next time save yoself sum money and have a good job dun :D
