8 Year Potted History

Hi Anyone that may be interested

I have only just registered but have used the forum when looking for help with faults etc.
We are just about to trade our Freelander in for something that is cheaper to run but I thought I would post
what a rollercoaster ride our Freelander has been.

Let me start by saying that although the vehicle has cost us an arm and a leg recently it has been a fabulous
car that has got us through snow, floods, taken us on holidays and has been a workhorse that my wife and I have really enjoyed driving. we have no regrets and will miss the Landy. We would buy a newer model if the budget allowed!

The first few year of ownership were pretty trouble free. The car is a 54 plate SE now done 85,000 miles.
So the car now is 11 Years old and we were the second owners.
We have gone for a smaller car with 4x4 capability, japanese and hopefully will be a bit more reliable
although we are sure will not have as much presence and character!

Most of the faults we have had are mentioned here on the forums and obviously due to its age things will start to go wrong. Here is a small list of things that have gone wrong in the last 2 years

New fuel Injector
Prop shaft bearing
Brake light Switch
Clutch cylinder
new brake pipes
Intercooler pipe/s
MAF Sensor
Wiper unit
Rear O/s window winder mechanism

Now for the really good bits!
The cars build quality has been excellent, no ripped seats and the paint is still thick and the body has no rust even though it has had a hard life going to and from stables and having kids and dogs as passengers more often than not.
In REALLY bad weather it has gone places where other 4x4s couldn't and has never actually failed to start or left me or my wife stranded.
It had heated seats and heated windscreen which were fantastic in the winter time.

We have promised ourselves that we will have another Landrover again one day and have enjoyed the 8 years we have had it. I will miss the Landy, the bills not so much

For a car approaching the 100,000 mile mark that list of spares doesn't sound too excessive. You'd probably not get away with much less than that with a supposedly 'reliable' Japanese car over a similar period. So it seems to me like it has been pretty good.

Agree that you'd expect those problems at that mileage. My observation is that modern JLRG products are more style over substance. Like many other makes they are not built to last. You can now pick up RR Sports n Disco 4's with 80-100 thousand on the clock for around £10K. Given the level of fandango complexity built into them they are a liability. Volvos are going the same way, all ponced up for poncy owners. This year a motoring icon ends and with it a legacy n heritage you'll be unlikely to see again.
