Whats difference does it make to the cylinder head if it's 5 or 3mb?

I is the number of main bearings on the crank shaft, basically a 5 main bearing is stronger cos it's got 5 instead of 3.

Aye I know that.. I was wondering what difference it made to the cylinder head though. I was looking at the Turners website for recon heads and they have 3mb & 5mb.

Take care .... because the 5 main bearing block has ... well, FIVE main bearings to fit in the spacings of the actual cylinders may be slightly different from 3 bearing engines.
If that is so, they will require different cylinder heads and head gaskets.
Basically, the whole block is different.

So does that mean I can't put a 3mb head on a 5mb block? or is it ok sometimes...

now you've got me thinkin! if there's different head gaskets for 5mb & 3mb maybe I've got the wrong gasket on and thats causing me problems? But I ain't come across two different types of HGs
5mb heads are metric and 3mb are imperial and are interchangeable but you will need the appropriate bolts for anything that bolts on to it, ie rocker shaft and maifolds. You will also need the bolt for the oill feed pipe to the head.

Cheers that does help. How do I find out if a head is metic or imperial?
Is it marked on? I've seen a decent one for sale but the owner don't know what engine it came off.

if the spacing wur bigger then shirley the whole block would be longer? in which case yer water pump would have to be shorter , to avoid the fan going into the rad.
the mil engine which were 5ml have a different water pump so maybe thats why.
