Hi, got a 2001 TD4. About 36 months ago the rear fuel pump failed, I got that replaced (new pump 1). About 18 months ago it started having intermittent failure problems. The garage replaced the front (under bonnet) fuel pump and it still occurred, so they put that one back and replaced the rear in-tank pump and that seemed to fix it (new pump 2)

About 6 months later the front under bonnet pump failed so I replaced that (with a non-OEM) (new pump 3). That lasted 4 weeks, so I got another non-OEM (new pump 4) and that lasted 4 months and failed today so I need a new one (new pump 5).

So all up, in the last 36 months I've had 2 rear pumps and 3 front pumps. A new record?

The front ones that fail appear to fail good - I put 12v across them and get nothing.

Now you've stopped laughing. Am I missing another fault somewhere else or have I just had a run of bad luck compounded by some crap aftermarket pumps?

I'll probably be shelling out for a new OEM for the front again today unless anyone out there has a spare one?

It does seem odd and a bit unrealistic - have you had a Landrover Diagnostic - it might be worth the cost as it will identify any other fault that could be contributing to these failures.

I think it has had a diagnostic on it but not at a LR garage. Maybe nows the time? I take it to LR specialists who claim to have all the gear, would that be true?

Would this be the same specialist garage that has replaced 5 pumps!?

I don't know if they have the diagnostic kit - ask them what make if is - I believe Landrover is called Textbook but others here will correct me.

There has actually been three different Garages work on the pumps! I did the last two myself as the front ones are pretty easy.

I'll Make some calls and report back!

Hi You don't mention any fuel filter changes. If the filter isn't changed then perhaps the pumps are being overworked?

I have to say, that the OEM fuel pumps in the early FL1's were very reliable. I'm not saying they dont fail, but they dont consistently fail.

If you had said : in life of vehicle , ive had 2 tank pumps and 2 underbonnet, then i'd think that was fair enough, but what you list is excessive.

There is only 2 possible reasons. You either have a fault on your vehicle which is causing this issue, or your buying **** parts.

I'd probably start with a new fuel filter if you havent had it changed in the duration of 5 pumps failing. Failing that i would probably remove my tank pump and check for debris in the bottom of the tank.

I personally would always change a fuel filter when i changed a lowside pump, but i guess thats alot down to preference.

Thanks for the replys everyone. I think part of it is crap aftermarket pumps, but it does seem excessive.

Its in the garage now having a new LR pump (ouch) and filter fitted. Hopefully that will be the last I hear of it. At least this way the parts are guaranteed.
