Jai i agree with alot of what you said, but it is also a bit too much of a generalisation. I know of a number of response guys who are full time military personnel, and others which are TA. i agree with what you say about the TA in a few instances, but not with others.

on another note the RAF have been deployed and along with response are at wycombe police station in a few military land rovers.

why more military ambulances have not been involved i dont know, i agree they should be used

depends what you do, you can join under the age of 18 but need parental consent, age to join without parental consent across the board is 18

Wicked, I never been interested in Cadets but the TA sounds alright. I know someone who is a Mechanic (TA Reme i think? If there is such a thing) and i would not mind doing that... Dunno if you have to be 18 to do that though.

Also, do they do driving tests with the TA? (I mean general driving tests.) My mate has a Crane license and a load of other cool licenses from the ta

At the end of the day all you can do is go along to the local group, meet the people and make your own mind up. Don't just dismiss it all just because someone on a forum is good at slagging people off.

BTW I know of several 4x4 response members that are also RNLI or Mountain Rescue.......again don't tar all with the same brush.

For me, if I find any of those type (the idiots that is) in the group I'm in they will be weeded out as not wanted. I'm 100% with you on disliking those people. But I disagree with you about them being the majority, I'm sure they're in the minority. I can only speak for my group, but I don't know of any of those.


And for others who've made comments.....I would say the best way to spot the idiots that want to parade about showing off with flashing lights is that they also ae the ones that start with "what's in it for me" and "how much do I get paid for this" etc.

Further to this Ratty knows who I worked for as I discussed a fatal that only someone who had been involved would know

REME are usually pritty funny guys but generally very good at there work to, well the ones i've had to work with in the TA, i guess that as they are for the most part but not a requirement machnics as a day job.

The types that Jai talks about actually exist in both Regular and TA personally i do think they are more common in the TA though. In the years i have been in we have moved from last line of defence against the red hord to individual replacemets for all operations, most people in the TA now expect to be called up (i do) and are prepered to go, you take the pay you do the job, simples.

BACK ON TOPIC (well kind of)

Does any one else think that if a lot more of the normal police cars and first response cars where AWD instead of FWD and in the case of lots of police cars RWD we'd be in a better situation? I work in Oldham which has had some snow not the most by a long way but not the least either. I have had no problems in fact i've had to tow one car and push countless others without ever getting stuck. My car is not a 4x4 just and estate with AWD its even an auto box.

When it's been going a good few years, maybe the funding may stretch to vehicles, just like the RNLI and Mountain Rescue - but they've been going a bit longer!!!

It was Wessex.

I'm sure there are several people including carpy who do a fine job, but the rest I have encountered are
1)flashing light and hi viz hero's (highways agency ****s)
2)don't now **** from pudding and want to help

I'm not mercenary, but I've seen a lot of idiots.

I've driven a slide back recovery and various spec lift's-unless it's someone else's gear- not a chance.

That said a decent offer I would, particularly witching hour in summer is magical.

Mine's magnetic too. I just took the magnets off and used bolts instead.

I found the best place to stick it......in the cupboard upstairs
