*My nearly finished Lightweight 1969 vintage with a series III gearbox has developed problem with the 4wd due to lack of use.

Initially after not driving it for a year (worked before) it was stuck in low range so I took the floor up and removed the metal dust cover for the selector shafts on the end of the transfer box (as someone mentioned on a previous post) and as expected the shafts were gunky and rusted.

So cleaned them up a bit and knocked the top one (not the one connected to the red lever) back in. This made the other top shaft (red lever one) pop out and put the landy back into high range 2wd.

Now the problem in it won't go into low range unless I keep the yellow lever pressed down. And when this is done it's only in 2wd low range.

So basically : How do I get that jammed shaft to pop out so 4wd and low range works??
I'd love to know.

Does yer engine run ? - might help to leave it ticking over in neutral to get some heat to the box

Yes tried that, it's MOTed and drives perfectly. My last attempt as after a 2 mile drive. I'm actually tinking of selling her so I'd really like to sell it in full working order.
Many thanks for your quick response,
Tim

Ok my mate had this trouble and this is basically what I did, removed both props (front and back), disconnected the big red lever and the likkle yellow one, undid the gearbox mount bolts ( the transmission mounting assembly ones if you wanna get technical ) on the output shaft side, then undid the bolts securing the casing, jacked up the side of the gearbox and after some jiggling and swearing the casing came off ( I think I did something in the transfer box to help with the removal, not sure....it was a long time ago ). Anyway once it's out just clean it all up or what I did was replace it with another one I had lying about and problem solved, worked like a dream and he never thanked me for it....

Hope this helps dude........

You did all that and he never thanked you?? Is he still your friend? That sounds quite extereme. What about removing the inspection cover and trying to get a drift in there on the end of the offending shaft and knocking it back?
I've got the cover off and can see the shaft,I'm just afraid I'll break some thing.
Thanks for your post

I tried knocking the shafts to no avail, what I did was the last resort basically without removing the gearbox.
Try knocking the shaft dude, it may just be that with any luck but go easy..... Oh and the mate I did this for, Well he comes round from time to time but only when he wants something for his landy...... I've usually got what he's after, but strangely I can't find it when he's here....:D

I got lucky with some tapping and boiling water (after a long drive) took a while, got the shaft out now need to make it spotless before I try to engage it. Thanks a lot. I think i'll keep her!

I have a similar problem now. A staff member drove my Disco yesterday and phoned in and said:
1) The vehicle had lost power suddenly (i thought OK, maybe the turbo is gone)
2) He could only drive in 3rd (Huh? clutch? Gearbox)

It turned out to be nonsense - apparently at some stage it had slipped into neutral on the transfer box. He then put it into Low range and probably ran at pretty high revs thereafter. He got it to a Landrover dealer and they have reported that it is now stuck in low range and they have been unable to get it out of low and consequently they are of the opinion that tadaa.. I need a new transfer box. Now that I only now know the full story, I am loathe to believe that it is the case. Any second opinions out there? There has been no problem with gears up until now?
