the title just about sums up the issue, lost all gears except 4th, driving along at around 50 and bang then nothing except 4th. got home via the AA and now in the process of getting it sorted. its going into a garage as i just dont have the strength anymore to lift a gearbox out but wondered what input you guys might have as to the problem??

Any rattles or problems changing gear before that 'bang' ?

IF you only have one gear then I suspect that the layshaft has sheared off. Typically when this happens you only get one as that's a direct drive through the mainshaft and the layshaft isn't involved. Is it a four or five speed LT77?

You mean a collapsed bearing meaning the gears are so far apart they no longer mesh? Lets hope - I understand that layshafts for LT77 are no longer available. I can sense an R380 conversion perhaps....

I'd have thought they're were a few about .... they have been used in loads of BL cars .... Vitesse, Jag and Sherpa vans ... they can't all have no spares left ...

Friend was trying to get one to fix his Jag with the same symptons as this and he couldn't find one for love nor money. Eventually found a replacement complete box which was rebuilt.

Any of the above, Pic 1 you can get the bearing still

you can still get layshafts or you could uptil recently ,to lose all gears except 4th front bearing or l/s plus m/s teeth must be bust, which could make box repair pricey you wont know till its stripped, you need box number ie 50a or 56a d,e,f,g,h to get right lay shaft they change depending on prefix and suffix

THANKS GUYS, i drove it slowly over to my garage this afternoon and its sitting there now , im prepared for the worst and a new gearbox if need be, new clutch while they are at it and anything else that needs doing while the box is out. ill let you all know the outcome for future reference here

4th gear is direct on these boxes, i.e. input and output shaft are essentially locked together - a good strong gear - good for towing.

Your box has snapped the lay-shaft of the bearing has collapsed letting the lay drop out of mesh.

If it helps I have a gearbox perfect working order £100 am in Kent can courier it to you ASAP if it gets you out of trouble has brand new slave on it too

cheers Haza, thats really kind but my garage has been told to make it new.. along with one or two other jobs.. i hope someone else reading this thread can benefit from you kind offer
