4 wheel drive engage - Problems

Hi,

I have just bought myself an 88 Landy but I cannot get the 4 wheel drive to engage? I have tried moving the yellow/red levers but failed miserably. Can anyone help me please?

you could allways buy a Range Rover scatty and be done,these commoners on here have no class.

Or do we have so much class that we don't feel the need to be ostentatious about it by driving a rangie??? Bloody nouveau riche!

thanks chaps - I will get some pictures up, if I can get it working that is. Not much of a landy without the 4 wheel drive. I hope someone hasn't killed it. Then I would be upset!! :hurt:

We're almost neighbours

we are indeed!! I have only just bought the Landy and need to do a few things to it but not much. That's providing the 4 wheel drive works :doh:

my first series 2a had a similar problem i couldnt get it into 4 wheel drive. a friend who had a good many years more experience than me on em told me what to do. if you get yourself under the vehicle and look at the gearbox (cant remember if it was front or rear) you will see a small steel tube like casing about 3/4 inch in diameter bolted to the gearbox, i think it was on the driver side, remove the bolts holding this 'tube' on and you will see a shaft. this shaft goes inand out of the gearbox when you select the 4 wheel drive gear. apparently this casing was prone to getting water inside it causing the shaft to sieze. give the shaft a good clean with wirewool and pleanty of oil and get some one to work the 4wd gear leaver in and out untill the shaft move in and out of the box. it was my very first job on a land rover and it is dead easy to do once you have located the casing. your problem might not be anything like the one i had but then again it might be.
