hi Guys

ive just purchased a Landrover freelander 1.8 SE-X PETROL 3 DOOR 2002 model with 72000miles
l ive found that when i dipped the clutch ,and over rev, changing into any gear, there ia a horrible nasty noise coming from center cat area

so i replaced the cat and it still made this horrible noise ,which if you hold the accellerator at 3000rpm in nutral, it will continue to make this horrible rattling noise

so i cut the pipe at the front of the cat which eliminated the cat and it still makes the noise

so i checked the cat below the manifold this was fine and looked in good order ,so im unable to understand where this rattle is from,
once i put the new cat on it enhanced the noise.

also when you press the accelarator to the floor then let off again, the revs slowly, and i mean slowly, drops to normal, as though its over reving, but actually decreasing slowly to normal rpm, the car runs sweet as a nut as long as you dont over rev it, at tick over it is lovely and quiet absolutly baffled by this aswell as 4 other mechanics please help

Sound like two faults to me the revving problem being the famous sticking inlet/butterfly valve as for the other noise suspect clutch release bearing.

Hi Guys

Thankyou so much for your replies , just got in from work,

are these expensive jobs to fix, as it is under warranty but parts only
,does the gear box have to come out,

I removed the heat sheild and still made the noise

Have a made a mistake buying this car, only i have 7 days remaining to return for my money back

Thanks again

Gary

Have no idea about clutch price. But the butterfly valve is easy to fit ,bought mine on ebay, get the metal type not plastic, for £40.00 2 years ago.

I would have gone for a diesel no head gasket failures.

Brian

yes you have they are a pile of ****e, should have gone for the diesel engine. who gives a warranty that is parts only. the car should be fit for purpose and it is'nt. take it back, get your money back and find a diesel.

read this then get shut of it:rolleyes:
oh and a garage can't give you a warranty that is parts only.

There's a damper on the clutch selector under the car (you'll see a pin slide in and out as gears are changed), make sure it's not deteriorated. A sign that it has worn might be the the gearstick has a bit of play in it.

Have you had the undertray off the car? If part of the undertray has been damaged it may vibrate against the exhaust downpipe where it splits 2 to one as it can sit quite low.

As for the butterfly valve, it's easy to check by activating the throttle body manually bypassing the cable. If it springs back easy enough then it should be ok. It might be the cable that needs a bit of oil slipping down it.

The diesels can have as many problems as the petrols. I love my 1.8k personally. If it's under warranty still, have them sort it.

Hi Guys
Thanks again for your replies

just been under car having another look after your advice, and ive found that when i hold the prop shaft, it rattles without the engine running, then when i turn the engine over and hold it, i can feel it chattering, and if i force my hand on it, it stops rattling,do you think this could be a bearing in the gear box,

Thanks again for your replies

Cheers
Gary

sorry i mean when i shake the prop shaft without the engine running i can hear it rattle

Just been out again under the car, and when i hold the revs at 3000rpm the noise kicks in, so i got my mate to force hard against the prop shaft, and it stopped, when he released, it came back, so he forced against it again, and it stopped, when i increased the revs to 3500rpm he could not put enough force to stop it, so we are almost certain its the prop shaft just dont know which part will need replacing,

Thanks
Gary

where abouts on the propshaft? near the diff or near the gearbox, (my moneys on the gearbox end £££££££)
have you took it back to the dealer yet?

Check each end of your propshaft for play. If the play is nearer your VCU it's likely to be your VCU bearings. If the play is nearer your IRD, it's likely to be the shaft bearings in the IRD itself.

Hi Guys
It was rattling at the gearbox end, think its an IRD unit (still not sure)

I have taken it back to the garage and they said they will fix both faults FOC,

Thankyou all ever so much for taking the time to reply back to me,hope im welcome back when i hit my next problem, more than likely will but im gonna give this lander a chance,

I will post on here, when the garage tells me what it is,

Thanks
Gary

Hi Guys

Garage says it is a bearing on the prop shaft (gear box end )

The Revving, still not sure they explained that they have cleaned out the throttle body, butterfly area, and everything looks fine and not warped,

He is having another look tomorrow, but did explain that they sometimes do this, is this true, if not, what else can it be

Cheers
