Hello, had a quick search but LPG Economy but it brought up bucket loads of stuff.

So, as the titles asks, whilst looking through the offerings on eBay (both petrol and diesel) one seller claimed that his tank cost him £40 to fill up and would last him 200miles. If that is correct then it's slightly better on fuel than my Rover 75!

Does this sound about right or is it fairly tale?

MrGorsky has a 4.6 GEMS on LPG. If you PM him I'm sure he'll tell you what he gets.

I think he gets 300 miles on a run but not sure what size his tank is.

I thought it was too good to be true. Another optimistic seller was claiming the equivalent of 40mpg and someone else was only paying 40p a litre for the stuff!

Well, put it this way, before he put it on LPG he was scared to drive anywhere in case his credit card couldn't cover his return journey. With LPG he says it is about the same cost as running a "normal" car.

That just made me chuckle. :)

Is there a way to search for members on this forum so that I can contact him?

Scrub that, think I've managed it.

well my 4.6 now top hatted and now 4.8 litre has a 80 litre tank which on average cost me about £48 to fill from empty at 78p a litre with my driving does on average between 220 and 260 miles !

thats not on a run, its a bit better on a run, dash computer says its doing 18 mpg ??

my engines as new inside plus ported and polished heads and inlet, 2000my bosch injection running prinns multipoint lpg

so thats it if its any help ? ps i like the sport mode too much lol

His last car was a jag if that helps get it in perspective?!

On the other hand. Mark4x4 reckons nearly 300 miles on a run from £50. Costs me more like £80 to get that from my other car. Admittedly it is a 2.6 petrol.

That's getting rather close to my car. I'm getting approx 90 miles to £20 with reasonably carefull driving giving about 4.5 miles to every £1. That's the same as mark 4x4 and a little more than SaintV8 (whos works out at around 4 miles per £1 so 25p a mile). Not nearly as bad as I thought.

this is my second 4.6 p38, first had single point lpg, that wasnt that good at all on gas and it ran like **** , did own a low milage 2002 diesel too but not for long ..... gutless, drank diesel ! it was remapped as well

4.6 Gems engine done 0ver 70k on gas mine gives 12.8 mpg on computer about 50 quid to fill up 90 litre tank gets about 73 max fill does between 180 to 220 miles but has been chipped for for max power current engine has done approx 30k .
But more importantly insurance is peanuts bits are cheap and once sorted are a cheap car to run for what you get imo

4.6 THOR on around 94k. 90 litre tank, takes 70 litres to fill so about £52.

I get around 13 mpg on gas, so a 200 miles tank. Mixed driving, about 60-70% open road / motorway.

So 26.5p per mile. Which is about 10p per mile more than either my 335d or my A4 2.0 TDI Quattro. But then they are diesel cars, not V8 Petrol trucks.

Even on LPG, you dont buy a RR for economy. If you want an economical car, buy an economical car.

I can ACTUALLY get LPG at around half the cost of petrol here, but even so, thats a 26 mpg equivalent, so still worse than a "normal" car. About the same as my Golf V6 4motion was, and slightly better than my V8 S4. Both of which were substantially faster, and neither of which were so HUGE.

Thanks for the continued replies. I'm not expecting it to be economical, I'm just trying to find out how bad to expect it to be. So far it's not quite as bad as I thought it would be. If it is affordable to use as a second vehicle for weekends, the odd bit of towing and a few jaunts into the countryside (I live on the edge of the Salisbury Plain) then it could be a viable proposition.

Thanks again, it's all very much appreciated.

Smiler.

Hiya,
I've got a 4.6Thor with multipoint LPG. it's a 75 litre tank, and I get around 230 miles to a tank (although I actually top up after about 180miles due to my journey to work). I'm paying about 76ppl, but my local garage has a loyalty schem which means I get another 1ppl off each time I fill, up to 10ppl less. (so anything from £50 to £60ish for a full tank of gas).

She's always around 18mpg on the dash, that's on 'A' roads mainly. Will drop to about 16mpg around town.

I reckon 18mpg on gas to work out about the equivilant to the missus running the mondeo (2.0 zetec-s) which is how I get away with having the rangie :)

One thing with LPG though, make sure you keep it well serviced, it's reckoned that LPG is about 95% the efficiency of petrol, but it does like an ignition system in good health.

Hope that helps.

Marc

Mine is a 4.6 2002 with 117000 miles on the clock. sequential Tartarini system with 90 ltr tank. I get approx 17mpg on good runs although computer will say 20mpg & pay 69p/ltr at Morrisons (about £55 to fill up). With extra servicing on lpg system etc this still proves to be cheaper than running a 2.5 diesel IMO.
Agree with Marc on servicing & make sure the cooling system is in good order - LPG does run hotter than unleaded.

ive got a 4.0 P38 with bec multi point lpg and I get about that - I use the car every day, dont use sport mode and have a light foot, if I was driving harder it would be much less im sure but 200 miles on forty quid is def possible if you drive like you have all day to get there!
