hi everyone, i have just last year purchased a 2003 4.4 v8 l322 rangerover and have started having issues with the gearbox, i have been on this forum and looked at other threads and have found its the torque converter, i have a juddering and droaning noise at 20-55 mph, but i cant seem to find a torque converter for less than 450 quid, is this how much they are, or can i get cheaper, if so where?? and any other advise would be much appriciated. Thanks, Tom.

hi there im wanting one as well but im having a new one fitted with a 3 year guarantee. from D & S i thought it better to go new on this as im keeping the car for at least 4 years £850 inc new filter and oil plus balanced properly. i was told they need balancing. and if there is any oil leaks they sort it not me after sales.they will look at the transfur box and other stuff as well as the gear box to let me know if its good for a while so worth it to me

Cheer guys, will look into the remanufactured ones, I have access to a workshop and tools, so can do it myself! Thing has been nothing but trouble, but I love it, so will sort this out as soon as, hopefully it's not the box, it's smooth when you out your foot down, just blow 2000 revs going uphill mainly it Judders and groans! Anyways that's guys! Tom.

As Saint says JPAT are very good and I had mine done at Sussex autos a couple of years ago now I guess and I don't know many people that can do them correctly but if you search for Bemble on here or RRPhil he may have them in stock as he is God when it comes to the ZF5HP24 and its related parts

There are thirteen different torque converters used for all the variants of the 5HP24 so I don’t keep stock of all of them, but certainly the F38/A85 model used in the Range Rover I always have re-manufactured ones on the shelf. The ones I have at the moment are produced by JPAT.

By the way (may be of interest to a few of you) I’ve now bought the Sonnax reaming jig & kit necessary to install their oversized main pressure relief valve in the 5HP24 lower front valve block. I might produce a short video to show how the process works when I get a bit of time.

Hi Phil, And another question... looks like things are progressing nicely, when would you need to fit the oversized main pressure relief valve, as in what systems does a failing one present?
cheers
Andy

Hi phil how long does a recon last compaired to new and what is the cost fitted for a recon thanks phil
Generally the only part that wears inside the torque converter is the lock-up clutch friction plate so, provided this is replaced and the spring retainer accurately re-welded back into position on the centre tower, there’s no reason the re-manufactured unit shouldn’t last as long as a new one.

A quality re-manufactured torque converter should cost around £250 and the book time to replace it is 4.7 hours.

This was a particular problem for early 5HP24s (i.e. Jags & BMWs, but before the Range Rover) where wear in the main pressure valve produced pressure spikes which caused the A-clutch drum to split at the clutch pack snap ring groove. However I still vacuum test this valve on every 5HP24 that I rebuild - even later models - and any with a low vacuum reading I will fit the Sonnax oversized valve to take the spool clearances back up to standard.

This Sonnax data sheet lists other possible issues relating to wear in this valve :

We are not worthy.....

Phil has truly reached 'Legend' status....

From now on I propose he is hereinafter referred to as 'The Legend that is Phil'....

This is my word, and as such, is above contestation.

I think Phil is concentrating on refurbishing / upgrading the transmissions and supplying the related parts but will no doubt be able to recommend somebody to carry out the transplant for you if you don't fancy it yourself but i'm sure he won't be far away to confirm if that is the case.
I spoke to a few 'experts' when i was looking to replace my torque converter and rebuild the transmission and ended up doing it myself with the help of a friend and invaluable guidance from Phil and others including Saint on here as even the wrong type of fluid will render the transmission useless until its changed.
