hi folks,

okay so just done a cambelt change and i also had to renew the p gasket so done all that.

but now it wont start. its turns over and some smoke came out the exhaust. but will not start. does that mean the fuel pump is miss timed. i know i messed up when i took the old belt off because i didn't put the timing pin in before i removed it, and so the fuel pump moved a good half a turn. now, i thought i had rectified it because i re timed it by moving it again, so the pin goes in out freely. before i take everything out again, could there be an other issue? or is it just the pump timing. because of how much the pump cog moved will i need to get the pump itsself re timed?

i am pretty sure the cam and crank are timed right, because i used the pin in the fly wheel and i lined up the cam with the lines on the timing case.

hope that all made sense.
thanks for the help

Did you unlock the pump before setting the cam/crank timing ?
If you didn't this may well be your problem.

reset the timing with the pump unlocked, then set the pump timing and see if that makes a difference.

Yes, you loosen the three bolts, set the cam/crank timing and then put the pin in the pump to set pump timing and do the three bolts back up.

If you did this then it sounds like you need to check all the timing again as something is out.

okay, thank you, I will try and set it all again. Although, I have been doing some digging online. I think I may have messed up my pumps timing completely, because the pump cog was rotated at least half a turn without the cam belt on. so I think i need to set the pump using a dial gauge. As even if I set it with the pin I have no idea how the pumps inner workings are lined up in comparison to the rest of the engine. Is that possible or have I misunderstood the purpose of the dial gauge?

As long as you only loosened the three bolts on the pump pulley you shouldn't need the dial gauge to get it running again. Just make sure the flywheel pin is in, the pump pin is in (with the three bolts just loosened and the pump sprocket in its mid position) and the cam timing mark is aligned when you tension the belt - then tighten up the three pump bolts.

all sorted, just got her started, pump timing was way out, didn't realise the pin wasn't set properly in the pump. thank you :)
