300tdi Water Pump question

Silly question but what is this hole in the water pump as water is squirting out of it. I'm in the process for replacing the P gasket and pump gasket but need to know if I need a new water pump?

am I missing a bung or are the seals inside gone?

Yup I blocked mine up at the side of the motorway to get home them replace my pump, don't put a plastic impeller one in it won't last

Its a seal failure case drain that lets any water leaking past the seal out the pump rather than letting it enter the pump bearing. Also warns you of impending failure - time to change it.
