Hello, looking to swap the 300tdi out of my 1996 defender 90 and put a m57 in its place, I’m looking to keep the 5 speed gear box. I know people have done this but I have no idea as to how difficult it could be or the cost. How I wire the ecu is also a big question. Any help would be appreciated

Your best bet would be to find a donor manual BMW 5 series with the M57 and gut it for the engine, throttle pedal, ECU and harnesses.
Label everything with regards to harnesses and connectors as you go along with the disassembly, and you shouldn't have too much difficulty completing the surgery on your vehicle.
The biggest challenge you might face would have to do with instrumentation, as I believe the instrument panel on the 300tdi defender is analogue whiles the BMW ECU would feed electronic signals for data from the engine.
Should you ever get around to doing it, don't forget to start a thread on here with loads of photos.
