300tdi road trip

Now then,
Looking at doing a road trip in spring in the 90 300tdi, has anyone got any advice on what to check/replace to ensure a fairly breakdown free trip. I was thinking of sending it to a specialist for an engine health check however I don’t know what this would cost
 
If you are thinking of crossing the border to Halifax or maybe even venturing North to Harrogate or South to Sheffield i'd think you'd be ok with just a fresh bottle of Hendersons and a couple of bags of frozen Yorshire Puddings.

Or are you going further ?
 
Replace the belts, take a socket set hammer and small crow bar.
Carry oil and coolant a couple of hose clips and a bottle of brake fluid.
Top everything up full before you go and don't hammer it.
Make sure you have recovery in the event of clutch failure and Check the brake pads have life in them.
Only thing on a 300 that has let me down in the past was me because I didn't check the clutch before I left.........

I’ve swapped master and slave and has had a new clutch, I changed the fan belt a few hundred miles ago but it looks like it’s wearing already so that’s an odd one

Goes without saying it’s not a road trip without Yorkshire puddings and alcohol
 
If the belt is wearing then some part of the belt is rubbing on an item.
Common wear point is the small pulley that is attached to the case bottom left hand side as you look at the engine.
Just take a spare belt. They take about 3mins to change
If the belt is wearing on the edges then some part is not lined up
 
As mentioned above if depends on the length and terrain of the road trip, a bit more information will help with some more focused and informed advice

Earlier this year I did a day trip to Stranraer which was about 700miles with no more prep than a cursory engine level check.
However when I went to Morocco (about 8000miles in two weeks, with 3000miles of trail driving) before going I:
replaced and/or re-greased all wheel bearings
replaced brake pads all around
replaced shocks and bushes
replaced panhard bushes
replaced two of the propshaft uj's that looked suspect
replaced the clutch
replaced all full fluids/filters in everything
replaced timing belt
replaced fan/auxiliary belt
I am sure there was more, but having done the above I still then carried a fairly extensive box of spares for trial fixes.

might also be down to the condition of the pulley if any of them are showing any signs of rust etc. might be worth running a wire wheel through the pulley grooves next time you change the belt.
 
It's no good trying to dissrail this thread with your Pasty nonsense, Yorshire puds aren't pasties, none of this round pastry folded in half combobulation, no sir.
Yourshire puds are more northern than your your southern softie filled rolls, more manly with a crispy edge, not like your edible man-bags.
No true Yorshireman would leave his county without 1 or 2 in his overall pockets :)
 
Yeah but he said 2k miles if he went north he fall in the water 🤔.

But agree taking food supplies is always a good thing:).
