Hi,

I need to replace my timing belt for the first time and i have been looking them up an i see a normal one and one that says modification?, could somebody please tell me whats the difference and how i know which is the one to get for my 95 300tdi disco?, or point me in the direction of another thread with this covered as i couldn't find the answer to my questions by searching

Thanks
Will

I believe the modification is the one issued to correct the misalignment in the early ones,

If yours was modified the dealer should of painted the timing case with a yellow marker,

From VIN number,

to VA560897 is early pre mod,

from VA560898 is post mod

the early type had guides on the idler, which tended to shred the edge of belts. the later type was a normal idler and a guided crank pulley.

If your still unsure, whip the cover off and have a look

Theres usually three types, original (for thise who really wish to keep it) the proper type with the normal tensioner, and the mod kits that come with the guided crank pulley.

Word of warning if you need the guided crank pulley, get OEM, may pattern ones are simply normal units with the guides spot welded on, and have heard of them coming off (and the ensuing engine carnage) OEM are one solid pulley.

Mine is TA171652 so that puts mine long before the mod ha, an no sign of yellow paint on the cover either.

I cant strip it to check at the minute tim, but when i do if it turns out to be the original type would you recommend i stick with that or change it to one of the others?, which ever is in it has been in for around 50k (date changed unknown) an hasn't give issue since ive had it. I had intended to get a dayco one, definetly not britpart lol

Thanks
Will

Thats okay, thanks for your help. Maybe someone else can tell me if i just fit the modified kit or if there is more to it than that?

Thanks

no as post 4 said fit new belt ,tensioner and idler ,and if your crank pulley hasnt any guides replace that too if it has leave it as is
