Hi all, well I seemed to have developed a bit of a strange noise and just wondered if any of you have come across anything similar. Noise basically sounds like a slipping fan belt - but having just changed it (old one looking decidedly worn!!) noise is still there. When you listen closely, it actually sounds kinda mechanical, almost like a loose nut rattling around inside the alternator or similar. I've checked and all appears fine there. Also replaced recently have been the water pump and tensioner . . Any ideas please :)

Cheers all . .

I had exactly this lately ...

Alternator bearings fecked on mine .. Take the belt off and see if the alternator pulley can move. It should only be able to rotate, if there's any movement up, down, left or right then you need either new bearings or new alternator, or recon etc.

Hey cheers guys for the speedy response - even though its cold and dark, gonna go check out the alternator - belts already off and pretty sure it had a little play in it . . .

As for tensioner - thanks for suggestion, but i'd kinda ruled that out as I replaced it only a month or 2 ago . .

Good call on alternator - there is a little play there. In fact, can even hear it knocking when you grab it and pull it around!!!

Cheers again

Nice one. ;)

I got a replacement for ~£75 from Craddocks ... A127 100 amp, but check it's the same as there were a couple at least different alternators fitted during the Disco's life ... ;) For the price difference I couldn't be bothered with a recon unit.

. . well, the latest on that strange noise . . took alternator off and oh yea, loads of wobble on it - didn't sound too good either. So off to Rimmer Bros in Bacebridge Heath (Lincoln way) to get new one. Fitted and with a smug luck on me chops, give it a go - guess what?? still had a bloody squeal AAARRGGGHHH!!!

In the interests of marital harmony - I decided not to check further on Christmas Day :) but think i've found the answer this evening. New belt isn't running completely in line between various pumps (if you know what I mean) there's a slight twist when coming off the tensioner to the water pump!!!!! Kinda confirmed it by pushing the belt across on the tensioner (with wooden handle - save wear!!) and squeal disappears!!! So guess what I gotta do tomorrow??? lol . . oh I just love it I tell ya!!!!

Try the one pence piece trick: loosen the belt tensioner housing from the block a little, just enough to slide a penny between the two and then tighten up.
This should stop the squealing, you might need to experiment as to where it needs to go for best results - it might be the nine or ten o'clock position but I can't quite remember.

fookernell Boomer, int no-one told yer there's a credit crunch going on???:D:D:D

You know what??? Bugger the expense I thought - my landy is worth that extra penny, especially if it stops the squeal - best penny i've spent on it so far by a mile lol . . . squeal now gone - wait for the next strange noise :)

Thanks for the suggestions - sure i'll be back for more advise soon guys!!

Have a Superb New Year all!!!!! :beer2:
