alrite peoples, just bought myself an N plate 300tdi for 500 notes, only problem is its drinking water like its going out of fashion, the headgasket just looks far too easy to do! is there somekind of catch?! if i unbolt ithe head will the bottom end fall apart?! am I right in thinking they're a push rod engine so I wont have to reset the timing? are they prone to cracking/warping heads? would rather keep it mobile for now until I can get cash to replace a cracked head, also while I'm on are there any simple jobs i could do like remove the EGR? thanks in advance :D

also what could i do to get a bit more grunt out of it? do they respond well to re-mapping? would a less restrictive exhaust help?

Depending on the specific vehicle (man or auto) you will almost certainly find at that age that there is no ECU to remap.

However, there are a number of other mods that can improve the performance considorably without spending too much cash.

Once you've done the head gasket come back on, for more tuning info.

Cheers
Dave

cheers big lad, not wanting somekind of face distoring beast just want a bit more low down grunt, feels a bit flat before 2k, possibly due to the headgasket like

No probs Liam, get the head gasket done and then we can start turning her into a fire-breathing monster - well, a bit nippier anyway :D

I'm off work for 2 weeks so got plenty time, should only take a couple of hours by the look of it, starting my offshore survival course on tuesday so will probably tackle it next weekend, cheers
