I'm about to do a full service and change all the transmission and axle oils and of course the Engine oil. I need to keep the costs down hence doing my own servicing. What fluids are people using and what recommendations do you have for engine oil, Mineral or Synthetic and what grade? Also any preference for filters, plenty of service kits on eBay, Britpart of Bearmach, is there any real difference?
 
I've already done a search but don't want to spend all night wasting time trawling through dozens of threads looking for info. Also as I've said before if people only ever use the search facility and don't start new threads then the forum grinds to a halt.

So maybe rather than tell me to search maybe just post a link to one of the best threads that covers this topic. that way I can thank you and then nobody need ever reply to this thread.;)
 
Im also in the same position as regards to a service and totally agree on the new posts thing. If you search and find nothing of any real use the the whole point of a forum is to post a question to be answered by someone who will happily reply with the answer.

If people don't want to give a helpfull answer then don't bother with.... "search". Most people savy enough to use a forum are more than aware of a search function and will use it before posting a question.

Totally agree! I've used forums for as long as they've existed so I do know how to search. which I do on here daily but products change, prices change, and opinions change. so a new thread can often bring new info and deals and offers on prices etc. Someone might know that Halfords have a sale on or someone might have had a problem with a certain oil or filter etc etc.

Anyway back to servicing....:D
 
Fair do's, good comments.

I'm using 15w40 semi synthetic, from Halfords brand, nothing wrong with supermarket oils if you stick to the service schedule and dont extend it.

EP80/90 in the transfer box and axles.

If manual box there is some contention between ATF and MTF, i'm using ATF at present as thats what the book said, but the book is as old as the car and things change. It still made a fantastick change to the crap that was in my box and the gearchanges are much better now.

I have learnt to steer clear of Britpart stuff if the part is safety related or holds fluids as there are plenty of tales of woe regarding them, i do use them for non-critical parts though.

Use OEM filters, a couple of ££ more but better quality where you need it.

Front swivels may be EP oil or one-shot lube, check first.

Thanks Dave much appreciated. ;) I just did a search on googl against that oil in the link from Wilkinson, its £27.00 for the 4 litre in some other places and up to £7.99 per litre else where, so I'm assuming that its not a bad oil, especially as I was thinking about using 5W-40. You've also confirmed what I thought about Britpart so I think I'll avoid them, I also found Eurocar have offers on winter servicing parts including the range of Bosch Filters.
 
Also, dont forget to empty the fuel sedimentor if its not been done, might need a new seal ring for it.

Has your motor got an EGR valve, if so, probably a good idea to clean/wash all the inlet pipes and intercooler out and maybe get shot of the EGR, lots of benefits.

How about the front exhaust cat? If thats still there it'll be the first lump in the exhaust pipe from the manifold, just under the passenger footwell, getting rid of that will reap more power/economy and better driveabilty, costs about £20 for a new downpipe.

Timing belt been done??

Yes I'll need the sedimentor ring. I've blanked the EGR with a kit from Ebay so new hose, also I've replaced the exhaust with a straight pipe so no Cat to worry about either. I have a new Bearmack HD Spring and Shock kit to fit and need new rear discs and pads all round as well, Mailorder4x4 have a rear kit with discs and mintex pads for about £23.00 and frount pads for about £12.00 so that seems reasonable to me.

Sounds like your'e well on the way to fun times:)

Discs and pads for £23 sounds bloody cheap, i think i paid nearly that for pads and fitting kit!
 
I use Motaquip MQV 10W/40 part synthetic and looking at my receipt I paid £21 for 10 litres. (2 x 5ltr) It came from a local motor factors.

Heres the Spec etc on it.

10W/40 Part synthetic engine oil
Suitable for Petrol and Diesel engines, Turbo and Normally aspirated.
Anti-Oxidant treatment provides resistance to oil thickening and sludge formation.

Find your local Motor Parts Direct. They do 25L of 10w40 Carlube semi for around £55. Thats enough for 3 changes with a bit left over for topping up :) They will also have all the filters you need.
