Ok so ive been having some trouble with the way my disco has been running..

I thought that it was the valve clearances so I changed them the other night but they weren't really that bad, so I thought it was possibly the fuel filter, I ordered a new one and ive been waiting for it..

When I did the valve clearances I didnt change the top seal or the bolts ect, That was on my too do list for the weekend.

So went to fetch the mrs tonight and it sounded like it had **** itself, lost power ect..

seems that the bolts that hold the top casing down had popped up and so one of the tappets wasn't doing anything, but why would this pop off?

And what is the god awful noise??... I know its because theres no lid on it but it was like this before just not as loud...

Do you mean one of the studs that hold the rocker shaft down has been pulled out of the head?

ive been reading about the rocker shaft and stripped threads, Do i need to helicoil repair them?

I noticed slight oil down the engine sides before it started making the noise properly but could this be because the rocker shaft was lifting up?

More than likely it has stripped the threads. You would get an oil leak because the rocker cover isn't secured properly so will leak from gasket.
Helicoil repair as you say is the best thing for it if it has ruined the thread, shouldn't be too difficult a job.
