300tdi rear door speakers and amp / head unit removal

the rear door speakers/subs or whatever they are dont work, had a look today and took the speaker unit right out , putting the ear right up close,theres a faint sound comming through-but is that just the cones picking up the vibrations and not actualy powering ?

1 of the speakers has a split in the paper cone, all the wires/connectors look ok , so i put it back together for now

the head unit is standard, cd multi changer is present but says "cd error" and presume not working ?

just wondered what the next step would be to sort the rear speaker ? do i check the back of the head unit ? (how do i remove the head unit?) ..im wondering if a non standard head unit may have been fitted at some point of time,and standard put back in for a sale down the line,and not wired up properly ? rear door speaker,multi changer,and 1 rear speaker, are not working at the moment,i want to replace all the old paper cone speakers and just get the whole set up working standard

or is it possible just the 2 rear door speakers need replacing ? if so any recomendations ? are they 2 normal speakers or are they small bass subs ? , or likley the amp has packed up ?

im not very good with stereos and wiring bit willing to try, presume im not the 1st person to want to fix this so would appriciate some help please on what to do

i am googling and searching, threads like this below have came up, but these are with non standard head units,mines still the standard set up, so want to keep it like that and get it all working perfectly

The first thing is to check the connections at the rear of the head unit as the rear door sub amp picks up it's power supply from the head unit, if the speakers are damaged then you can replace them, they are just normal and available with the same type of bolt fixing from ICE shops take one in and ask them to match it.

To remove the unit u will see four holes two either side, if you push four pieces of thin rod (cut up a coat hanger) into the holes that will release the retaining clips, then with fingers in the cassette mouth 'pull' if it hasn't been removed before the first time it's hard, as the rear rubber retaining plug and wiring harnes are stiff.

Just to add to discools post, if pushing rods into the holes does not work it may be fitted with 4 small grub screws in the holes. You need to loosen each of these with an allen key and then pull it from its housing.

Mine has a oblong plug with two wires red & black thats' the audio and for the power supplies (there's two a permanant and a swirtched supply) is in either the brown or black ISO plugs, I forget which now one but one of the iso plugs just has the loudspeaker connections so eight wires (4 pairs).

ok mate thanks, thats tomorrows job gonna have a good look and also get the multi changer out , im hoping il pull the stereo out and theres connectors there not connected and i plug them in and everything works, nice to be hopeful i spose

If you connections ar ok and I suspect they are, sorry... then so you can check the supplies at the amp I can dig out the colour code for supplies at the connection block.
You will need a multimeter.

yeah i know mate im expecting them to be ok , but gotta check and just hope that an aftermarket stereos been fitted possibly and this one put back in and not connected properly

not got a multimeter but could probably borrow one

speaker plug is usually brown with 8 wires, power plug is usually black, with usually 5 wires.

cd changer is probably goosed, but if youre lucky you miht just have a bad connection!
